What exactly are the Germans attempting to prove dragging an 89 year old man out of obscurity to face a war crimes trial? That they weren't the only ones who participated in the Holocaust?
War Crimes trials were originally set up to try MAJOR war criminals and policy makers. At Nuremberg only major war criminals went on trial , not lowly camp guards. After we liberated Iraq, we only put major policy makers on trial, not low level camp personnel. In all probability it is highly unlikely that there any MAJOR Nazi war criminals alive today.
John Demjanjuk has ALREADY had his day in court. He has ALREADY served his time in prison. Israel released him because it was proven that he was NOT Ivan the Terrible.
While he may have been a camp guard at Treblinka and Sobibor, are there any credible witnesses alive today who can postively identify Demjanjuk herding people into the gas chambers? I highly doubt it. He was a lowly camp guard, not an SS officer.
I think because Americans have the luxury of being protected and sheltered by two large oceans, we cannot conceive of what the people of Europe endured confronting the twin evils of Communism and Nazism, especially the people of Eastern Europe who suffered the most.
Just a few years prior to the Nazi invasion of the USSR in 1941, the Soviets liquidated approximately 8 million people in Demjanjuk's native Ukraine. Is it any wonder that millions of people living in the Soviet occupied countries initially greeted the Germans as liberators when they invaded the USSR?
As for Demjanjuk himself, he was originally conscripted into the Red Army before he was conscripted into the German ranks. Who knows what his choices were. Either work as camp guard for the Germans or toil away in their slave labor factories.
Whatever else John Demjanjuk may or may not be, regardless of whatever else others may think of him, it is simply absurd and ridiculous to suggest he is major Nazi war criminal. At 89 years of age, and having already been placed on trial before and having already served time in prison, this man is already very close to his Final Judgement in any event.
The truth is many Europeans collaborated and complied with the Nazis during World War II including such notables as French President Francois Mitterrand, Austrian President and UN Chief Kurt Waldheim, and the famous designer Coco Chanel who slept with Nazi officers during the Nazi occupation of France.
If these prominent individuals, who cooperated with the Nazis were allowed to move on with their lives after WWII, why not the retired auto worker from Seven Hills, Ohio? Why is the German government so intent on making an example out of this man? What new evidence do they have which hasn't already been presented before?
Perhaps Demjanjuk did in fact enter our country under false pretenses. But if that is such major crime you'll find a lot of major war criminals here in Southern CA where I live who are in this country illegally. And, btw, a lot of these criminals are very dangerous, join violent street gangs, murder people, sell narcotics and terrorize whole neighborhoods. Demjanjuk is a harmless old man compared to these violent terrorists who openly flaunt our laws and laugh in our faces.
This whole thing is blown so way out of proportion it defies common sense. At worst Demjanjuk was a Sgt. Schultz, not a Maj. Hochstetter. Let's save war crimes trials for the instigators and policy makers as they were originally intended.
Heck, we have an illegal alien from Kenya in the White House who is 1) not a citizen, 2) doesn’t have a Selective Service Number, and 3) the Social Security of a dead man. So . . . big deal with John Demyanyuk!
The worst part is that they have NO new evidence since Israel reversed his conviction and found him Not Guilty.
The Sobibor survivors who testified said they knew all the guards and he was not there.
Well, at least Demjanjuk escaped in one piece from Israel.
His two Israeli lawyers were not so fortunate - one was found after a 20 story plunge - the tops of his shoes left scuff marks on the window sill.
The other lawyer went to his funeral - and was blinded by acid thrown in his face.
That's pretty much it.
Wow! Did not know this happened to Demjanjuk’s lawyers. The current ones better get some bodyguards!

Political Correctness has an order of “justice” that is best described as a show trial justice system and order of rights. This man has already been tried for this once and he was found not guilty in Israel. Political Correctness means the trials are never over for targeted symbols.
