Seattle Cartoonist Blasts South Carolina Workers

Seattle Cartoonist Blasts South Carolina Workers

It’s one of the funniest cartoons we’ve seen in a long time, even if it is nothing but sour grapes.

Cartoonist David Horsey of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer – miffed that Boeing Corp. chose North Charleston, S.C. over Everett, Washington to assemble its second line of 787 Dreamliners – took pen to paper (well, not paper, really) to vent some of his frustration against the Palmetto State.

“How many non-union South Carolinian workers does it take to attach a wing to a Boeing airplane?” Horsey’s cartoon asks, portraying several dim-witted rednecks attempting to attach a wing to an airplane with duct tape.

“Five … and a dog,” it answers.

In addition to the duct tape, there’s also a rebel flag, a moonshine apparatus and a guy who looks an awful lot like our founding editor (third from bottom, beneath wing).

Horsey isn’t alone in venting some condescending angst at South Carolina. A local community college professor from just south of Seattle, T.M. Sell, caused a stir earlier this week by calling South Carolina workers “the functional equivalent of Walmart greeters.”

Sadly, we haven’t done much to prove them wrong …

Here’s Horsey’s cartoon (click to enlarge) …

UPDATE – Thanks to Katherine Jenerette for pointing this out (see comments section below), but the cartoon also appears to feature a noose dangling just above the wing. Wonder what Horsey was implying by that? We emailed him a moment ago in an effort to find out, and we’ll be sure to bring you his response, if there is one.

He not only hit us on being ‘Southern-Stupid’ but it looks like Cartoonist David Horsey ’slipped’ in the noose, a symbol of lynching on the upper left. Not very funny to me or to most of the people of this Congressional District where these jobs will be located. Or are my eyes just playing red-neck tricks on my South-Carolina-Mind?

In Seattle we are used to his petty narrow minded view.
Just typical.

I’d like to point out that Horsey lives in a quiet and quite white, upper middle class area in Seattle, far from the effects of the liberal policies that he pushes on us rednecks.

My guess: half as many as it would take if they WERE unionized.
At they'd do it at half the cost.
And in half the time.
What do I win?!

Perhaps he can do another cartoon version: How many Leftist, Washington State politicians does it take to chase the regions largest employer and its jobs out of the state?

Yeah, that one would be funny...HAR, HAR, HAR.

Horsey is a real liberal idiot. I lived in Seattle for a few years and had to deal with the press.
My wife was a consultant to Boeing and you can be sure that the crew working to build planes in Everett is just as red-necked and mostly conservative as SC, but they are Union and hope to hang on to their high pay and perks.
Horsey, in my opinion, is one of the most virulent cartoonists out there.

What? Boeing doesn’t plan to hire any black workers in SC, a state that’s about 30% black. But we all know why this cowardly little PC twat of a cartoonist only included white guys.

Please do not directly post copyrighted cartoons from the PI. It deprives them of hits, and they’re trying to make it online-only. Thanks.

It’s not a noose, it’s just a rope with a loop in it. If you look there are four ropes hanging down from above.

Doesn’t even know how to set up a still, either.

Who’s the white haired old lady? peeking out the aircraft window?

And why shouldn’t South Carolina win the contract? It’s a nice place to raise kids.

I think the Left Coast is a bit jealous of our Southern appeal.

Well... I’m one Seattle-area person that wishes all the best to South Carolina. Don’t let the unions kill Boeing for you like they did for us.

They haven’t called it the Lazy-B ranch for nothing. The unions deserve exactly what they’re getting. It’s time the work went to people more deserving of it.

“Seattle Cartoonist Blasts South Carolina Workers”

LOL! South Carolina Workers? Are they the “workers” who are actually employed?

Too bad the union gang up in the Northwest drove themselves out of business.

I’m glad they managed to keep those jobs in the US.

Boeing said that Northrup-EADS wouldn't be able to find enough people smart enough to build the Air Force Tanker in Mobile, Alabama.

People here are still fuming about that statement.

You know, as a Carolinian, and as a Southerner, I’m quite used to the ignorant, narrow-minded bigotry of those from other regions of the United States toward the South. In particular, those from the West Coast and the Northeast.

So, it’s no surprise to see this kind of bilge come out of the liberal mecca of Seattle. I expect to see more such garbage out of the NY Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, etc.

Here’s the deal, Seattle, et. al. — WE got the Boeing plant. YOU didn’t. So, we must be a little bit smarter and a lot more hospitable than you guys up there. But hey, you still got your space needle, right?

I wonder, were the aircraft built in Harlem, what derogatory term would be used to describe the workers?

I disagree. He’s got the other ropes holding the wing but purposefully left that one hanging as a noose. It’s not a rope “with a loop”.

Definitely a noose. The other ropes/chains that are hanging down only have loops on the ends. That one has a noticeable knot with one end of the rope sticking out of the top of the knot. No doubt Whorsey meant for it to be a noose.

Hope you and the family are well!

Glad we were able to touch a nerve with the Marxist cartoonist. After Boeing gets a taste of nonunion labor, they will be coming back to South Carolina with more plants.

I hear ya about the West Coast and Northeast intelligentsia and media bias (bigotry?) towards Southerners and Westerners in general.

The trash talking was a real hoot when the Seattle Supersonic basketball team was moved several years ago to Oklahoma City. Some of the players were active in the trash talking as well. After Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans Saints moved temporarily to OKC while the Superdome was being repaired. The Saints liked OKC so well they wanted to relocate there permanently but couldn't get out of their New Orleans' contracts for the stadium and such.

You betcha! In the immortal words of Florence the Waitress - KISS MY GRITS!!! I am so sick and tired of the media and Hollywood depicting us this way.

My sister, who lives in Atlanta, had the audacity to make the comment that Charleston was not a cosmopolitan city. She was quickly abused of that idea. We may not be as big as Atlanta or Seattle, but we can hold our own on the international and national scene at any level.
