Vaccine Shortage

Posted on 10/26/2009 4:49:33 PM PDT by newbie2008

I am a pregnant woman in Salt Lake City, Utah. This weekend our health department had a mass H1N1 flu shot clinic, with 7,000 shots to give out, in 4 clinics. It started at 7am. I knew my chances were pretty small when I saw the night before people were already lined up. When I got there at 7am, I wasn’t hopeful, seeing what looked like 4,000 people lined up. I went and stood at the back of the line and started to wait. After about twenty minutes one of the Health department people came up to our group and said there was no point in waiting as they would run out of the vaccine about 1,000 people ahead of me. Some people started arguing with the guy, I just left. (I later on learned that 45,000 people lined up outside one of the clinics). One of the main concerns and problems in this to me was that it was free. It seems to me that had they charged at least 20 dollars a person, half those people maybe would not have even been there. There are people that aren’t in the high risk groups getting the shots, just because they are free. I thought about it, and I would have paid and still would pay about 200 dollars for the shot. Maybe, next time I will think ahead and offer that amount to someone in line ahead of me…

This is a blessing in disguise. I won’t get the shot, pregnant or otherwise.

$20 or free, I don’t think I’ll get the vaccine. Thanks to my students, I’ll get whatever is going around.

If I were pregnant, there would be no way, no how that I’d get anywhere need a vaccine. Who knows what harm it would do to the baby.

Drink a little whole milk in the morning, or at least have some cheese. At the time of day when sunlight is shining at the right angle through one of your windows, take your shirt off. Sit or lay in the sunlight for about 40 minutes, changing positions and areas of skin exposure every few minutes.

That’s the way to get plenty of vitamin D, activate it and avoid the flu during colder months. Also do your special exercises for pregnant women. If you don’t know what those are, instructions should be easy enough to find with a search of the Net. Be sure to get them from a doctor-approved (MD) site.

The last thing I would do is get the shot if I were pregnant. In fact, I’m not even contemplating getting the shot, under any circumstances.

Whaaaaaaaaaaat? At what street address did this allegedly happen? I don't even believe the 7000 the writer says she witnessed, much less 45,000. There would be screaming headlines if this was actually happening.

That being said, I wouldn’t get the shot if they paid me to take it.

Can you explain the drink milk and get in the sun for 40 minutes thing? My understanding is that the amount of vitamin D in milk is very small compared to what is really required.

It’s a lot better and more efficent to take 1000 IU of vitamin D3 in tablet form every day. The amount in “a little” milk is negligible, and trying to do it by indoor skin exposure is iffy — most window glass blocks over 90% of UV-B rays, and some newer windows may block closer to 100%. What would probably be pretty effective would be to have a UV-B lamp in your bathroom, and have it on after showering while brushing teeth, shaving, styling hair, etc., in the buff. From what I’ve read, there’s little point to more than 15 minutes of exposure, because in that time, the levels in the layer of skin where it’s produced will reach a point where a chemical equilibrium will prevent further production until it’s dispersed away from that area, which can take over 24 hours. As for me, I’ll stick with the supplements (plus close to a quart of milk I drink in an average day).

(I later on learned that 45,000 people lined up outside one of the clinics).

Spending a few hours in a crowd like that sounds like a good way to get the flu. Does the immunity take hold (assuming you get the shot) faster than the virus can incubate?

"Can you explain the drink milk and get in the sun for 40 minutes thing? My understanding is that the amount of vitamin D in milk is very small compared to what is really required."

Here's an excerpt from the link that I posted earlier, but it's better to read the whole piece. ...or better, yet, peer-reviewed, original studies.

Epidemic Influenza And Vitamin D
Medical News Today ^ | 09/15/2006 | Dr. J. J. Cannell
"A single, twenty-minute, full body exposure to summer sun will trigger the delivery of 20,000 units of vitamin D into the circulation of most people within 48 hours."

I'll add that you can get vitamin D from oily (wild) fish (mackerel, sardines and salmon, etc.) and unrefined fish oil. Also...soy milk fortified with vitamin D, some fortified orange juices (see labels),... The only cheese with vitamin D is Swiss cheese (something that I didn't know before). So yes, GovernmentShrinker, a vitamin D supplement (at least a 1,000 units) might be a good way to go.

I'm not a doctor and have been an adherent to getting vitamins from a varied diet...until now. More than 10,000 IUs of vitamin D supplement per day can be toxic, BTW, and some drugs do interfere with vitamin D supplements (check w/ doctor).

...no studies with enough proper controls, yet? I didn't know that. Thank you.

I don't have a cite for this one, either. But an Army soldiers' manual said that enough exercise promotes deeper sleep, and that deeper sleep strengthens immunity. Are there any ample and peer-reviewed studies behind that to your knowledge?

Not sure, but encouraging women to take their shirts off and sit in the window might just in itself be a special exercise in helping them get pregnant.

Actually, this isn't true. On my uncle's dairy farm I asked him why certain cows had rods attached across their necks. He told me it was to keep them from drinking milk from other cows.

There are many studies dealing with sleep and the immune system. If you are interested, google should pull up hours of reading.

An interesting but unrelated factoid, moderate exercise stimulates the immune system but running a marathon depresses the immune system for days.

Considering that glass blocks the UV needed to make vitamin D, I consider this endeavor beneficial only to the neihbor waiting outide his door for the show.

You may have dodged the bullet, except that you were exposed to thousands of potential donors.
Follow the story carefuly, and you can note that there will be absolutely no statistics kept as to how many, of all ages, die within two weeks of getting the vaccine...

On the other hand, the seasonal flu vaccine, threatening the very young and the very old, is nowhere to be found.

"do you feel that Vit D supplements are worth it?.....VitD has been talked about as a cure or treatment for a lot of things...( arthritis for one...neuromuscular diseases for another)"

I don't know and am even less sure of that after some extra reading. It appears that much of the positive information about large doses of vitamin D is coming from the likes of the "Vitamin D Council" and New Age, "holistic" folks.

Most of the doctors' statements that I've read indicate that we can get plenty of vitamin D from varied diets that include fortified products, cereals, fats, and a little sunlight from normal daily activities. The question arises, though, as to why we more often get flus during winters. ...vitamin D, sunlight, exercise, circulation of outdoor air,...? I don't know.

And BTW, as for the comments about UVB light being completely stopped by clear, clean window glass, that's not quite true. About 5% of it does pass through (quite a bit, relative to filtering by other things). And if it is the light that's needed for vitamin D generation, then how much of it is needed? According to many of the vitamin sellers and their associates, we must take large doses of vitamin D supplements (ranging from 400-1000 units).

But physical exercise, varied diet and cleanliness (avoiding touching face, washing hands with warm water and plenty of suds, bathing) has kept me from catching colds and flus for years at a time, even while living close to many others (barracks, dormitories, other duties, service jobs).

...caught a flu last spring. It was mild and probably due to sedentary living at the time (cramming some study for a project and foolishly neglecting exercise).

Although it's possible, there's probably not much chance of me catching it now. I'm a little sympathetic to the many people who more recently had the Mexican flu in the nearest tiny town, though (last few weeks). It was spread mostly by far between the public school kids and to their families (probably shedding virus indoors for about a week each). There were a few hospitalizations (pneumonia) of older folks and children. Not many others were affected by it.

I have been paying attention to vitamin D recently, since I was deficient and have a nerve disorder. Everything I have read suggests that the amount they put in milk etc is so low as to hardly be relevant. That’s what I was asking about. Certainly, sunlight is the best place to get D. I think a glass of milk has something like 100 iu per 8 oz glass. That’s a lot of calories just to get enough D in your diet. It may be better than nothing, but a suppliment with D3 is better.
They used to teach that D was toxic at higher doses, but it appears that this has not proven to be true. At the moment I’m taking 5000 iu per day, and getting more sunlight. I’ll be anxious to see what my next test shows.
I just think people need to know that food sources, if they get very little sunlight, or they use sunblock all the time, probably are not giving them enough.
But, thanks for mentioning D. I think it’s something most people have no clue about.

Very good question!
If you get infected by the flu virus while waiting in line, then the vaccine will offer you no protection.
The incubation time for the flu is about 2 days and it takes a person a few weeks to build up immunity to the virus from a vaccine.

That is about what I thought. I didn’t know how long it took for immunity to build but I had a strong hunch it would be longer than the incubation period. Undoubtedly a lot of DUmmies wait until they feel sick to go get a shot too.

When I see the reports, I think of how if Bush were president, this would be reported as another Katrina-size debacle....vaccine shortages, long lines, we’re all gonna die, etc. Instead, the reporters give glowing reports about these wonderful patient people willing to wait in long lines so that they and their children can be safe....
