I am a pregnant woman in Salt Lake City, Utah. This weekend our health department had a mass H1N1 flu shot clinic, with 7,000 shots to give out, in 4 clinics. It started at 7am. I knew my chances were pretty small when I saw the night before people were already lined up. When I got there at 7am, I wasnt hopeful, seeing what looked like 4,000 people lined up. I went and stood at the back of the line and started to wait. After about twenty minutes one of the Health department people came up to our group and said there was no point in waiting as they would run out of the vaccine about 1,000 people ahead of me. Some people started arguing with the guy, I just left. (I later on learned that 45,000 people lined up outside one of the clinics). One of the main concerns and problems in this to me was that it was free. It seems to me that had they charged at least 20 dollars a person, half those people maybe would not have even been there. There are people that arent in the high risk groups getting the shots, just because they are free. I thought about it, and I would have paid and still would pay about 200 dollars for the shot. Maybe, next time I will think ahead and offer that amount to someone in line ahead of me

This is a blessing in disguise. I won’t get the shot, pregnant or otherwise.
$20 or free, I don’t think I’ll get the vaccine. Thanks to my students, I’ll get whatever is going around.
If I were pregnant, there would be no way, no how that I’d get anywhere need a vaccine. Who knows what harm it would do to the baby.
Wouldn’t get it even if free.
Drink a little whole milk in the morning, or at least have some cheese. At the time of day when sunlight is shining at the right angle through one of your windows, take your shirt off. Sit or lay in the sunlight for about 40 minutes, changing positions and areas of skin exposure every few minutes.
That’s the way to get plenty of vitamin D, activate it and avoid the flu during colder months. Also do your special exercises for pregnant women. If you don’t know what those are, instructions should be easy enough to find with a search of the Net. Be sure to get them from a doctor-approved (MD) site.
The last thing I would do is get the shot if I were pregnant. In fact, I’m not even contemplating getting the shot, under any circumstances.
I’m not a doctor, BTW, but I am older, analytical and studious.

Beware high doses of vitamin supplements, if you’re pregnant, though. Ask a doctor first.
Sweine flu shots can mess you up
Locally produced honey will do wonders too! And it tastes great!
Whaaaaaaaaaaat? At what street address did this allegedly happen? I don't even believe the 7000 the writer says she witnessed, much less 45,000. There would be screaming headlines if this was actually happening.
A lot of people would line up for a bag of dog poop if it was free.
That being said, I wouldn’t get the shot if they paid me to take it.
Can you explain the drink milk and get in the sun for 40 minutes thing? My understanding is that the amount of vitamin D in milk is very small compared to what is really required.
It’s a lot better and more efficent to take 1000 IU of vitamin D3 in tablet form every day. The amount in “a little” milk is negligible, and trying to do it by indoor skin exposure is iffy — most window glass blocks over 90% of UV-B rays, and some newer windows may block closer to 100%. What would probably be pretty effective would be to have a UV-B lamp in your bathroom, and have it on after showering while brushing teeth, shaving, styling hair, etc., in the buff. From what I’ve read, there’s little point to more than 15 minutes of exposure, because in that time, the levels in the layer of skin where it’s produced will reach a point where a chemical equilibrium will prevent further production until it’s dispersed away from that area, which can take over 24 hours. As for me, I’ll stick with the supplements (plus close to a quart of milk I drink in an average day).
You do realize that there is no proof that vitamin D prevents the flu.
Spending a few hours in a crowd like that sounds like a good way to get the flu. Does the immunity take hold (assuming you get the shot) faster than the virus can incubate?
I’ll ask you again; can you cure the flu?
You’ve confused me with someone giving out “cures” on the internet.
Not in the least. lol
Milk? Cows won’t even drink it once they are grown.
I am not a cow.
No, but pigs will.
Looks like the opposite happened in Denver over the weekend: http://www.9news.com/news/local/article.aspx?storyid=125711&catid=222
Not sure, but encouraging women to take their shirts off and sit in the window might just in itself be a special exercise in helping them get pregnant.
A serving of oatmeal will likely have more vitamin D potential than a glass of milk.
LOL! The more kids, the merrier, IMO.
There are many studies dealing with sleep and the immune system. If you are interested, google should pull up hours of reading.
An interesting but unrelated factoid, moderate exercise stimulates the immune system but running a marathon depresses the immune system for days.
“Not sure, but encouraging women to take their shirts off and sit in the window might just in itself be a special exercise in helping them get pregnant.”
Considering that glass blocks the UV needed to make vitamin D, I consider this endeavor beneficial only to the neihbor waiting outide his door for the show.
Must quit replying after taking benadryl.
Neighbor waiting outside the window.
Yes he could take his shirt off...or something
Thank you! I’ll find the info.
On the other hand, the seasonal flu vaccine, threatening the very young and the very old, is nowhere to be found.
ha ha...they gave out 2000 vaccines but had 2000 left....
I am glad that not all people are falling for the hysteria......
I don't know about the pregnancy angle...
I fully believe that the swine flu is a weak flu in MOST people and that its peaked already.....
do you feel that Vit D supplements are worth it?.....VitD has been talked about as a cure or treatment for a lot of things...( arthritis for one...neuromuscular diseases for another)
“On the other hand, the seasonal flu vaccine, threatening the very young and the very old, is nowhere to be found.”
The seasonal flu vaccine is available and showed up early this year. I saw them giving it at Target in September of this year. I got mine at work in September.
I have been paying attention to vitamin D recently, since I was deficient and have a nerve disorder. Everything I have read suggests that the amount they put in milk etc is so low as to hardly be relevant. That’s what I was asking about. Certainly, sunlight is the best place to get D. I think a glass of milk has something like 100 iu per 8 oz glass. That’s a lot of calories just to get enough D in your diet. It may be better than nothing, but a suppliment with D3 is better.
They used to teach that D was toxic at higher doses, but it appears that this has not proven to be true. At the moment I’m taking 5000 iu per day, and getting more sunlight. I’ll be anxious to see what my next test shows.
I just think people need to know that food sources, if they get very little sunlight, or they use sunblock all the time, probably are not giving them enough.
But, thanks for mentioning D. I think it’s something most people have no clue about.
Cherry, it was one of the first things my neuro checked me for when I went to see him for neuropathy, so clearly it can be an issue. I was in fact very low. Like most things the human body needs, we avoid it (sunlight!) at our own risk.
You’ll have to make up your own mind but, check out Dr. Mercola’s website:

Personally, I think this administration is looking for a national emergency.
Very good question!
If you get infected by the flu virus while waiting in line, then the vaccine will offer you no protection.
The incubation time for the flu is about 2 days and it takes a person a few weeks to build up immunity to the virus from a vaccine.
That is about what I thought. I didn’t know how long it took for immunity to build but I had a strong hunch it would be longer than the incubation period. Undoubtedly a lot of DUmmies wait until they feel sick to go get a shot too.
I could add; waiting in line with 100s of other looters to get some of 0ba-Mao’s stash is another good way to get the flu too. And karmically appropriate.
We’ve had local news reports since the weekend, showing long lines of people waiting in lines for 3 hours or more for their shots. When I see the reports, I think of how if Bush were president, this would be reported as another Katrina-size debacle....vaccine shortages, long lines, we’re all gonna die, etc. Instead, the reporters give glowing reports about these wonderful patient people willing to wait in long lines so that they and their children can be safe....
The media is such a joke. I haven’t even watched local news in about fifteen years.
