One of the people, a great-grandmother, reached into her purse on the floor, pulled out a .357-caliber Magnum pistol and shot Winston once in the chest.

Big gun for a purse. It’ll get the job done, though.
Ah, yes; a .357 magnum. One of my favorite handguns of all time. I call mine “The Big Ouch.”
That went well with my sunday morning coffee.
Case closed and filed.
But she put other guests at the hotel in danger, using that caliber. It could have hurt people in other rooms.
Charge her with public endangerment.
Not so quickly there, Mr Rothschild:
... the case will be presented to a Franklin County grand jury. County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien said it is a long-standing policy to present any case of a death caused by a weapon to a grand jury...
O’Brien is a standup guy. He’ll do what is right.
Winston had just been released from prison in September 2008 after serving seven years for crimes that included second-degree burglary, stealing a firearm, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and three counts of stealing a motor vehicle, Lapine said.
Wonder what he really did.
>>Winston had just been released from prison in September 2008 after serving seven years ...
I think I’ll file mine under “slow learners”.
So will the grand jury.
Thats one tough Great Granny. From the sounds of the story she didnt blink an eye.Just pull from purse and shoot.
Let's hope so.
And let's hope that this poor 70-year-old Grandma had all the I's dotted and the T's crossed with her concealed-carry paperwork.
'Cause if she didn't, then she could be looking at some serious jail time.
And if the family is wealthy enough to own quarterhorses, then look for the Perp's next of kin to file a multi-million-dollar wrongful death lawsuit [in a jurisdiction of their choosing].
Unfortunately, the case isn’t closed. They are going to present it to a Grand Jury, which means that at the very least the elderly woman, who lives far enough away to rent a hotel room, will have to travel back and find accomodations. Unless they are going to have a grand jury proceeding without hearing from the surviving principal.
I think it stinks.
Sounds like they were people of some means, horsy set and all. Wadda wanna bet some shister isn’t gonna get the kids dear old mudda to bring a wrongful death lawsuit, in an sufficiently sympathetic jurisdiction.
BTW, seems this jamoke spent approximately six of the seven years of his adult life (ages 18-24) in prison.
They can cancel the warrants for his arrest, now.
My dad, a cop, had a similar situation...justified shooting that had to go before the GJ. After 15 minutes of deliberation, the foreman came out and shook his had for removing a menace from society.

Go Granny with your 357. Any torso shot will give you very close to an assured onr shot stop.
Seems like a long sentence for nonviolent crimes. Some people serve less time than that for homicide. Just saying - we need to overhaul the justice system.
Kind of a powerful cannon for a great-Grandma. But, hey, looks like she can handle it!
I think the GJ will return a no bill.
They'll be drilling a dry well. Ohio has a Castle Doctrine and if the GJ No Bills you, you can't be sued in Civil Court. The thing that bugs me is that the paper states the family fears retribution but then goes ahead and mentions the town she lives in (pop 11,000+). (Keep that .357 handy, gramma.)
Read this post on Granny from one of the enlightened crowd (taken from the newspaper)
So he got a record well that dont make no nevermind. Which one of you all is all sinless an perfect? If you aint all perfect you aint got no right to say nothing so now just be quiet. What this granma doing with a 357? She lucky she dont shoot herself or another in the room and why she staying where she dont belong in the first place? She got horses mean she got money. She was looking for trouble and now a man is dead because she shot him over nothing but money. Greedy rich people killing poor people over money. Maybe he Wayne was hungry or thirsty and needed food or drink an she shot him. Would she shoot Jesus if he came to the door? She might if he was black. Why she leave the door open anyway was she thinking no one would come into a open door? The one man who can put the lie to the her claim of robbery is shot dead so the police got to take her word for what happen. Where is justice? Dont believe everything the police report there is a conspiracy between cops and whites. All you got to do is read the news to know it is true!
Geez...??????? Perhaps a job in the ODumbo administration for another Czar...

I like "Granny Oakley".
Well! I guess that particular Son of a B!!!h won’t be robbing anyone else, EVER!
One of the things I like about my wife’s purse holster is that she can easily conceal one of her big pistols. She carries a firearm because she has the sweet appearance of a woman who knows only about kittens and tea cozies. Thugs sometimes percieve her as an easy victim. Because of this I firmly believe it is more important for women to carry conceiled weapons than men.
My wife has been victimized before; she wouldn’t lose any sleep over taking out a thug who was trying to do it again. She’d be much less likely to take her target out than most men that I know.
