Tell me if I have seen this before: Swine flu, Russian subs off the American coast, indecision toward Afghanistan, hot summers followed by cold winters. And then there is high unemployment and soon-to-be high inflation. Am I imagining things or is this a return to the 1970's?
I remember the 70's very well, especially the winter of '78. The heater broke in the middle of the coldest winter on St. Louis record and it was a miserable time. What struck me most was scientists trying to blame the frigid temperatures on global cooling. Make up your minds, will you.
Today, we have a president given to us by the Democratic Party, just like Jimmy Carter in the 1970's. Both followed increasingly unpopular wars, at least to the media. Both seemed to be novices, which the media deemed virtuous. Both have proven woefully inept at handling the demands of the office, but the media conveniently glosses over this fault.

Yes, conditions now are somewhat like the ‘70s in some ways, for the time being, but there are many more servants far fewer producers than during the ‘70s. The fun is just getting started.
Get ready ASAP, and stop buying. Let’s starve the beast and shake these morons.

Good article... but I will not slap you, Pedro.

You need someone to slap you, Pedro? Shuwah!

"Where Carter failed, Obama is trying to fail even worse."
Sadly, it would appear that Jimmy Carter will forever be seen as Obama-lite...

I don’t know, but I think it is worse. We didn’t have Nancy Pelosi as speaker, at least there was a Ronald Reagan in the wings,...of course I was a little kid then, so I don’t remember who the politicians were in the house and senate.

I think it may be worse now. In the ‘70s, there at least was a manufacturing base to our economy. Now we are a service economy which is far weaker. America, as we have known it, is no longer .

Back in the 1970's there was actually some stuff on TV worth watching.
Seriously: We lost manufacturing, we've lost civility, we've lost our culture. We're in trouble.

Tip O'Neil wasn't exactly a conservative. In fact he was far worse than San Fran Nan because he was not only corrupt, but competent. A smart thief is infinitely more dangerous than a dumb one.
As for the team waiting in the wings, Reagan was popular only with a small fraction of the Republican party. The NE RINOs were not willing to accept him until they were faced with another four years of Carter. I wasn't voting yet, but I remember it clearly. Nobody saw Reagan being as big as he was. Nobody though the Solid South would swing the way that it did. It took the economic and cultural devastation of the 76-79 to convince rustbelt union workers to vote against their union leadership in mass. It took the Iran hostage crisis and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan to convince main street to take a risk on putting "That Actor" in the white house.
What they are saying about Palin today is identical to what they said about Reagan, except the press painted Reagan was old and senile to boot. He may be a political demi-god now but in 1977 Ronald Wilson Reagan was best known, by all but the political junkies, as a guy who played second fiddle to a monkey. We all figured Carter might loose, but we never thought it would change the political landscape as much as it did. Certainly not in 1977.

Well that is good info. to know. :) Gives me hope that maybe we can turn things around again, because honestly at times I feel it’s hopeless. :/
