Think of Disaster Preparation as Survival Insurance…

Think of Disaster Preparation as Survival Insurance…

For anyone reading this that thinks that it seems a bit crazy or excessive to spend money to solve a “problem” that they consider “highly unlikely” or that brings you worry just to think about… what about Insurance?

We all spend money to insure ourselves against potential losses, many of which are highly unlikely:

Home- we insure the value of our homes against fire and other natural disasters; Auto- we are insured against accidents and related medical expenses/liability expenses; Liability/Umbrella- we are insured against someone suing us for inadvertent damages; Health- we are insured against health costs, especially catastrophic illness or accident; Disability- we are insured against loss of income due to illness or accident; Life- we insure our family so they are taken care of if we die prematurely;

And there are other forms of insurance as well…

Most people spend money on Insurance every year IN THE HOPE THAT THEY NEVER USE IT.

This is a useful mindset to think about your financial investment in getting prepared for a potential emergency situation– it’s SURVIVAL INSURANCE. We are insuring our family against natural disaster, pandemic, monetary collapse, terrorist attack, or other threat that could disrupt the regular society safety net we are all dependent on…

And you get the added benefit that most of the things you spend money on (food, water, etc) will be useful to you in your daily life as well.

Think of Preparation Costs as another insurance expense and budget $100, $250 or $500 a month to getting this “Survival Insurance” in place. At the very least, you’ll have improved peace of mind knowing you have done what you can to prepare. And if the unthinkable happens, it could save your family’s lives…

I started a new Bugging In blog about preparing your family for in-home survival in the the case of a natural disaster, pandemic, monetary collapse or terrorist attack/war...

For anyone who thinks preparation is only for tinfoil hat nutcases, maybe this is a better way to think of preparation...

please check out my posts on preparing... this is a work in progress.

http://beprepared.com is a good site. Freeze dried products have a very long shelf life. They usually have a big sale in December but many items on sale every month. I have a family of 5 and have been adding a case or two of #10 cans every month. I have about six months of food on hand and water for a month. It’s not cheap but it is prudent. And yes, I also have guns and ammo.

Thanks! I started “prepping” after reading “One Second After” a few months ago. There is no possible way to prepare for all emergencies but just being aware goes a long way. I’ve always enjoyed camping and “roughing it” so my wife and I will be fine. I have water supply and ways of purification. I have a couple of months of food. Check the COSTCO website for survival foods. I can bug-in here in the city for a while or ultimately, I own a farm in another state where I can bug-out to. Heat, light, guns and ammo (for hunting and for protection). Have plenty of options.

Here’s another site I visit often;

Read “Patriots”, maybe a bit militant for my tastes but packed with a lot of information. I just ordered Rawles’ new book so we’ll see what it’s like. I’m just a bit old to go playing Rambo in the woods ;-)
