Last week's talking point at The Humble Libertarian was a question of how we of a libertarian mindset should approach politics. Should we work to reform the Republican Party from the inside-out, should we focus on a third party, or should we eschew parties altogether and focus on education? A very thought-provoking discussion ensues in the comments, including my own response, which turned out much longer than I thought it would, and so I am re-posting it here.

A third party would ensure a Democrat victory for the next hundred years .... look what happened when Perot ran ....gave us Clinton ... bad idea. Best thing to do is infuse the Republican party with people who have courage to stand up and fight for America ....not weasel down like McCain ... SARAH SARAH SARAH!!!!!
a certain high percent of dems are locked and will never go to a third party ...we need to pull from both parties to have a win at federal level...third party needs to start at local level and work up...
Right off the top we could start with elimination the “two party” lie.
But as Rush said about third parties ... it will split up too many people giving the Dems the majority ...
And Rush has been proven right time after time. Reform the Republican Party from the Grass Roots level or spend the next 40-50 years under Democratic rule. It happened before.
Of course, the longer-term danger of strengthening the Green idiots as a way of weakening the Democrat idiots is that they may form a coalition of idiots
It pains me to admit it, but Rush is most likely correct and we would be somewhere between a Socialist and Communist country by the time a viable third party was up and running. Another option would be a mass exodus from seated non-RINOs changing from (R) to (L)...risky. What may work is “contract with America” type pledge in the primaries with the candidates pledging and signing on to conservative, Libertarian principles. If they take the primaries it will send a very clear message to RNC to reform and conform or go the way of the Whigs.
Exactly ....
You should read Michael Medved’s treatise regarding this. That said, we need to pass laws that protect us against government. For example, we should have a law that the Federal government can only spend 10% of our cumulative adjusted gross income. Why should we always have to worry (12 trillion times) that government is overspending? We should also have term limits - because our country was never intended to have professional politicians like Kerry, McCain, Hatch, Byrd, et al. But we have to do it by law, and not by political party. Because it is not a matter of political party, but how to ensure the survival of the USA. And no party seems to have that in mind. It is more like the Democrats promise the sun, moon, and stars. Which bribes the electorate. So the Republicans come along and promise “only” the stars. But we all know the sun and moon and not far behind.
absolutely correct.
libertarians can get .5% of the vote in nearly any election. Unfortunately this doesn’t win many elections.
I just vote against ALL democrats.
I think we should do away with parties, period. We are not a parliamentary system, and we see the folly of the two parties trying to run everything and keep dissenters at bay.
I’m hoping for a real housecleaning come 2010 ... Barry will have just Biden and Hillary ... all the rest will be gone ... what a fantasy ...
The Libertarians should implement their plan to take over the Democratic Party.
Really, they’re as likely to do that as to do anything else. When you think about it, what have Libertarians ever done, beside talk? Talk a lot. Hey, show some stones, Libertarians. Take over the Democratic Party and use it to grind the Republicans into dust.
false
hildebeast is bailing and will mount a primary challenge in 2012
the only difference is ZerO is worse than jc and hillary is smarter than the guy that killed that girl in chappiquidik
Well not so false ... Obama still has some time left and Hillary still will be his SecState ....unless she bails and he has to appoint someone else ... now there’s a thought ...
