Fisker Automotive will receive a $529 million subsidy from the US government to build hybrid cars for the US market. This follows a previous subsidy award of $465 million to Tesla Motors to build electric cars. Both awards were made on the recommendation of international climate genius, former vice-president Al Gore.
The models may seem a bit pricey for the average motorist with the Fisker vehicle going for an estimated $89,000 each and the Tesla for $109,000.
Gore touted the subsidy as a first step toward a completely green automotive future. While these vehicles may look expensive, they are really a moderately priced contribution to saving the planet. Those who insist on owning their own transportation should be willing to pay this price. Those unable or unwilling to pay the price for their own vehicle should contribute by using public transit. No one has the right to pollute the planet just for the sake of their own freedom to drive wherever they want at a price they can afford.
The former vice-president suggested that buyer reluctance might be overcome by targeted efforts like the recent cash for clunkers program or by federal regulations forcing all manufacturers to match the performance standards of these green cars and the phasing out noncompliant models.
In related news, in his speech to the We Media Conference Gore declared that American democracy is in grave danger from unconstrained criticism of the government by right-wing fanatics. They are abusing the very Internet I invented with their screeds against the President and his efforts to engineer an orderly transition to a new society of communal caring.

Of course, $529 million to create automobile industry jobs in Finland so Al Gore can have a spiffy new car. What geniuses.
Right that is what all this global warming crap is about. To benefit the likes of Gore and the rest of the people who have established companies which benefit from tarp investment money for energy related companies. The tax payer pays. If the company isn’t successful, Gore doesn’t lose any of his private money, just the tax payer tarp money. If the company is successful Gore reaps all of his share of the profit. Just another Democrat reaping money off of the tax payers’ back. Add this to Barney Frank, Rangel, Dodd, Geitner, Pelosi, Reid, on and on and on.....

Nikolai would approve.
Does anyone seriously doubt that somewhere in Al Gore's mind this very sentiment is really floating around?
More truth than poetry in that one.

If I drove that on a California freeway, I assure you I would need to pee...
#12 was supposed to be to #11...

Yes, I would rather drive a pea!! I AIN’T gonna drive one of those EVER!
Saving the environment is only for peons....not important people lie G O R E~~~~big blustery talking idiot!
[Actually, that’s a wreck between two trucks and a Ford Escape SUV.]
Then we can only use our imaginations of what would have happened to a smart car! The article says the driver survived, hard to believe. On a thread awhile back we agreed that it would be wise just to bury that car......!
It is so easy you can mash it right in with your potatoes.
Pea-pee car. would it improve traffic, though?
You may have to submit an appeal.

Only if you are all wee wee’d up...
That is scary -
"The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which is funded by insurance companies, recently completed crash tests on eight new or redesigned small SUVs. Four of them -- the Volkswagen Tiquan, Ford Escape, Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan Rogue -- earned the Institute's Top Safety Pick award" (CNN MONEY) .
What did the other vehicles look like?
My 20 year old 5300# car would survive a 45mph headon without bending the frame.
We’re supposed to be the bosses, the pols are supposed to be our peons.
There are too many megalomaniacs in Congress. Put them in Pea Cars, give them Obamacare.
I hosey the limo.
As an old junkyard owner told me.
In the old days, we buried the driver and fixed the car.
Now we fix the driver and junk the car.
Controlled crush is a good thing unless you are colliding with a tri-ax dump like those pics.
As long as it's pea-sized.

Would you like to try some other garden variety car?

Maybe the trucks were rolling stimulus packagles.
LOL - looks like Al Gore will have to pea-size himself for that to work....(fat (hehe) chance.)
A reader who told us he was present at the scene of the accident said that (although it is not visible in this photograph) a second vehicle was between the Ford SUV and the dump truck at the time of the collision but was knocked onto the grass underneath the elevated roadway, and that any vehicle "short of another dump truck" would have suffered the same crumpled fate as the Ford did.
Put a refrigertation unit in it, and it would make a great keg cooler. You could drive it to the next beer pong party.LOL.
I would call it bubbles for short. You could drive through the neighborhood like an ice cream cart, dispensing glasses of draft Ale.LOL.

Good post potlatch!
.
Close but no cigar!
Lotus actually designed and builds the Tesla roadster for Tesla - using mucho expensavo ultra-light materials to offset the huge battery weight required
Shelby also has a carbon-fiber Shelby Cobra electric (427 S/C style) classic-bodied roadster - torque is about 1000 foot-pounds if I recall correctly - over 240 miles per charge - 110-220-440V
Torque and a smooth instant application of power is the key
Lightweight batteries are still expensive unobtainium dreams for Joe 6-Pak and vehicle designers and manufacturers
Washington DC is giving mega-million dollar grants to algore and other fakeroos - while US hot rodders and some car US manufacturers already have prototypes on the road yesterday
GOOGLE: Baker Electric
You can be electrocuted messing with some hybrid or pure electric vehicles
Your house can burn down while charging it!
GOOGLE: Electric Car sets fire to home
He could straddle the wings.
Thanks devolve. I have an idea for that Pea Car!
.
Post your SmartCar test crash .gif
I gotta short errand
Be back
Geez!
Gore is a drain on the country! He should have to pay
extra taxes!
Actually, it seems we agree then. The Tesla is a Lotus design/spin-off. I.e, the Tesla is not really a US product, other than perhaps being assembled in the US. Hardly worthy of the hundreds of millions of tax-payer subsidies.

.
Super potlatch!
Took me half an hour to find it!
.
I believe you will find that the Tesla Roadster (Lotus electric-powered) is actually made in England - the electic motor may be one copied from old German submarine electric motors - I am just guessing at that - US electric drag bikes, drag snowmobiles, some drag cars are using that Siemens electric motor or a development from Siemens
http://www.wipo.int/pctdb/en/wo.jsp?wo=2004068680
Carroll Shelby’s AC Cobra was a later copy of a John Schultz’s sick AC-Bristol that had a Corvette V8 and 3-speed Chevy PU truck floor-shift tranny swapped in in tractor & truck repair shop on Dixie Highway in Pompano (see Wikipedia for the much earlier [and much faster] AC-’Vette conversion)
GM refused to sell Shelby the hot Chevy engines as it would compete with their Corvettes; Ford Motor Company jumped at it and shipped the small-block Ford 260ci V8s to AC in England for adaptation assembly and shiiping to the US
Shelby never made a penny on his early Cobra roadster sales - in spite of their racing success in SCCA
Now he is involved in many ventures operated out of Vegas
Ford’s mistake was not to buy out AC and hire their engineers and workers and make Shelby a percentage partner
It would have benefited the Mustang program more and produced mucho bueno PR results and huge Ford product sales
.
Didn’t you you type “Smart” into the D File Finder?
