Unearthed after 1,400 years
Daily mail ^ | 24th September 2009 | Daily Mail Reporter

The largest haul of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found has been discovered by a metal detector enthusiast on farmland in Staffordshire, it was revealed today. Experts say the hoard, which is at least as significant as any other treasure from the Anglo-Saxon era ever unearthed, is worth millions and could have belonged to a king. The discovery of at least 1,345 different items, thought to date back to the seventh century, is expected to redefine perceptions of the period. Terry Herbert, from Burntwood, Staffordshire, came across the collection as he searched a field near his home with his trusty 14-year-old detector and is now in line for a seven-figure sum.

I love this story. The best part is that the finder and land owner will get the “market” value for the find. Of course after the British government takes their 75% cut via taxes it may not leave too much...

Yes but, that 75% will guarantee him a 30% chance of being misdiagnosed by an NHS "doctor".

Beautiful craftsmanship indeed.

Perhaps that is why “the Crown” gets first dibs on the treasure in spite of who owns the land or who finds it.

If there were some Roman artifacts among those, would Italy get their fair shot at confiscating the artifacts as well?

What ever happened to finders keepers?

The UK government has the last word on any antiquity. They go through the motions of having a third party place a value on the find but this is typically done by a museum, funded by government.

From the Media Blog on NRO Kevin D Williamson writes

‘Record Anglo-Saxon treasure trove found,’ reads the AFP headline. I wonder what an Anglo-Saxon treasure trove looks like? I’m guessing a bunch of really old Sperry Topsiders, martini shakers, a couple of golden four irons, and a cache of blue blazers with Episcopal Academy crests on them. You know, stuff old white people liked.

Beautiful artifacts, thanks for the post. That is one honking big hoard of high end goods that someone buried. That is the coolest thing about England and Europe every place has such a long history. Not that the native people here didn’t have long histories, but finding a chipped piece of flint just isn’t as interesting.

Beyond cool is right. Treasure hunting is fun. I’ve been coin shooting for years all along the Missouri/Kansas border. During the Civil War many households buried their things of value in hopes of returning after the troubles were over. Many didn’t and under old farmsteads are often found items from those times. I’ve found pieces of plate silver and pewter several times along with buttons and bullets.
