Was Obama Ever Popular

This might come across as a strange question for those on the left and the right. On the left, he was seen as a transcending figure whose popularity was due to America's sudden shift to "progressive values." Yeah right. To conservatives, it was a sign that a lot of Americans really didn't know what was going on.

But there are factors to show that Obama was perhaps less popular than Al Gore, John Kerry, or even George W. Bush in the 2008 election.

The election wasn't about Obama, it was about "Not Bush"...

The Dems just spiced it a bit by offering a black candidate as added insurance.

Americans have always been attracted to bright, shiny, new things. In that respect we are like Crows (the bird, not Native Americans). Whatever glitters, whatever catches the sun attracts them. We want to be in the forefront of innovation and love competition for the best and more of it than anyone else. That fascination has been our muse and it has also caused us to move far too quickly without thought for what comes next.

The attraction to our current President was superficial — we wanted to move into a post-racial world. We wanted to get over our silly selves and play balls-out and knock one out of the park. While I still admire America for that gutsy love of pioneering and throwing off the shackles that kept us down, age has replaced youthful impetuosity with a more calculated approach.

While I believe the Democrats are still the party of youthful exuberance, it is still the party of let's bound forward with no thought for tomorrow. It tends to change directions as each new bubble bursts and fades. Unfortunately, we all have to live (or in some cases die) based upon the "Oops" mentality that drives them. While I applaud Americans for their unending hope in the future and our continued progress, I find myself worrying more and more about who has to follow the act with a broom and a shovel. I think that's what is happening right now -- a lot of us are coming to the same conclusion.
