My windows vista had me download 3 updates today. Told me they where "Important" one was called Vista Service Pack 2.
After downloading them I can not get to any web pages except Free Republic.
I am guessing its a DNS problem but Free Republic must be a SuperPage. It's faster then a speeding vista problem, able to leap DNS problems with a single bound, etc, etc.
Ain’t it awesome? ;)
There are other web pages?
Maybe somethings up with the Internet ... I can only get a small selection of the usual sites I go to, but fortunately Free Republic is one of them.
Try using OpenDNS. I've found that ISP's default DNS servers are hopelessly overloaded.
Vista 64 bit here.
No problems .. so far
I have the same problem at the moment. Can get on a few sites only.
All that means is that Homeland Security has got a specific wire tap warrant specifically for your postings on free republic. Post away.
me too..any suggestion or reasons?
justlurking
Can you use OpenDNS if your pc is on a home network and using a usb adaptor to connect to the other pc’s router?
I still can’t upgrade to SP1. Every time it downloads, it crashes. Sony of no help. (I have a VAIO VGC-LT15E)
From time to time, we have cable issues and the repairs put the system down. Usually the call to our cable provider provides the answer and a time frame until usual service resumes. Might be the same with your ISP, but as I am in California, it would be very interesting if this is affecting a larger area.
whats happening, some 9/11 virus?
I feel your pain. :)
My computer has Vista also. It couldn’t completely load ANY webpage and if I had more than 2 tabs open it couldn’t download anything. I didn’t know if it was the new version of Mozilla or the “crucial” Vista updates.
Anyway, last Friday I lost my temper and beat the crap out of it...destroyed the hard drive and broke the motherboard in half.
Now I’m using a 10 yo laptop that I downloaded Safari on and it’s working surprisingly well.
I am working on older Dell with windows xp.
This has been happening to my home connection for the last week. I figure a backbone router is crapping out somewhere. No one at the ISP seems to have a clue that there’s even a problem though.
You guys have no idea how good it feels to know I am the only one. That means I can stop trying to fix my computer and just wait for whoever to fix the net.
I think it's just the opposite ... it's a simple site without all the insane gizmos.
The quickest fix for Windoze Vista is a fire axe.
I’ve got TimeWarner cable, in So.Cal.
Yahoo, Google, AOL, & Bing, among other sites, aren’t available.
“I think it’s just the opposite ... it’s a simple site without all the insane gizmos.”
And that is what I love about it. Well, that and FReepers.
Mac Snow Leopard here.... No problems. I’ll check on one of my Win pc’s later.
You can use OpenDNS just about anywhere. You just have to override the DNS settings for your network connection.

Windoze - reboot early, reboot often, give it lots of memory, and always have your virus protection up to date.
I am having that problem too. Only a few sites that I can go too.
Obama must be goofing with some switches.
FWIW, I am on Time Warner in San Diego.
Sony makes good TV’s.
My pocket Mac (iPhone) seems to be doing alright.
I’m in Coeur d’Alene, ID. Same trouble here and I’m on TimeWarner as well. Are we seeing a trend?
Yep. I am Time Warner Cable too. I can only get into a few sites, but can’t open email. I have called in the past and found that they’ve been hacked, or had a virus, or a main line of some sort went down. Usually they are up within an hour or two. If it is something major, might not be up until tomorrow.
No problems in South Carolina.
WindowsXP with IE. Work
Mac with Safari. Home
No problems with either.
So it isn’t everywhere. Are you with Time Warner?
Time Warner. Linux. Southern California. Same here...
(how’s the job situation there?)
Oooohhhh... I love me some San Diego. I went for the first time ever two weeks ago. I gotta hit that town again.
Thats a nice city ya got there. As I mentioned before I'm about 176mi out.
Time Warner does some strange things sometimes. 3 weeks ago I couldn’t get into my trading software because TW had the ports blocked on their server.
I wonder what reach Time Warner has. I’ve never checked. Do you know if it’s nation-wide?
Come on ova
Negative.
Possible Time Warner internet outage ping.
Not sure. We will probably know more soon. The best way is to call and ask. It is late though and think I will be shutting down for the evening soon anyway. It is evening, the wait times for a response I called would be fairly short though.
We have it in SC.
I used to subscribe to it. But, I switched about a year ago.
Luckily, I work remotely for an East Coast firm.
LOL. I cannot access your link. Can you give us poor sots with Time Warner the gist of the info?
f you’re a Time Warner Cable subscriber who has been having trouble with your Internet service lately, the company wants you to know why. In a letter to Ars, Jeff Simmermon, the director for Digital Communications at TWC, told us, “We’ve been having serious service problems in SoCal related to hacker activity.” The company has posted an official statement on the issue with a few more details, but the culprits’ identities are as yet unknown (or being kept out of the public while the situation is under investigation.)
In its official statement, Time Warner Cable states that the attacks have been occurring over the past seven days and that they have caused customer DNS queries to repeatedly time out. The company’s statements refer to these outages as “sporadic timeouts which appeared to be random events,” implying that it took corporate IT time to ascertain the malicious intent behind these seemingly random failures.
These sort of attacks are scarcely news to any major ISP, but Time Warner admits that the problem this time around has been both larger and more difficult to control. As of February 24, the ISP claims to have deployed additional early detection and response capabilities, but declined to offer additional details on how the new systems function or if they closed any newly discovered loophole that allowed this attack on the ISP to occur. Boilerplate advice follows: customers who want to reduce their chance of being infected by malware or zombified by a botnet should update their antivirus scanner and/or deploy some sort of firewall. The standard “we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you” concludes the statement.
Kudos to TWC for stepping up and admitting the existence and scope of the problembetter to tell your customers there is an issue rather than let them sit around pulling out their hair. If the ISP really wants to make a good impression it could pro-rate the monthly bill for those customers who were effectively knocked offline for significant amounts of time, but TWC’s apology may not extend into actual service compensation
I’m up now
Nice gig. :)
(sort of confirms what I thought)
At one point that area was way up on my list of “plan b” if/when things go south here. Been a while though since that seemed optimal from what I’ve been monitoring.
Beautiful country though. Just thought I’d ask. Thanks.
Yep. Hackers. It is had happened before. We haven’t been down long before they fixed it.
But maybe not tomorrow unless TW gets healthy. I can use the day off.
