Gory, Shocking PSA Warns of Texting While Driving Danger [Every Teen Driver Must See This]
AOL Tech ^ | August 17, 2009

Posted on 08/20/2009 11:51:31 AM PDT by CMoran325

The dangers of driving while texting (DWT) are undeniable, yet people continue motoring along, heads down, fingers flying, as they clog up traffic or swerve in and out of lanes. In a nod to the classic blood-and-guts driver's ed films of the '50s and '60s, a police department in Wales has decided the best way to raise awareness of the deadly DWT epidemic is to disgust and scare the crap out of people.

The new public service announcement, which spares no details, includes snapping necks, piercing screams, blood galore, an orphaned child, a dead infant, and multiple helicopters. The only thing apparently missing is a flattened, cute little puppy. While the spot may seem disturbingly graphic, it does effectively deliver the message. Hopefully, it will make its way from Wales to the States, and, more importantly, become required viewing in high school driver's ed classes everywhere.

I am making my 15-yr-old watch this whole thing TONIGHT! (We don't allow any texting, but in case she has any ideas about borrowing a friend's phone...)

Here's a link to the video directly on youtube.

They just passed a no texting law in TN. I’m not sure what I think.

Before you could hold the phone up in your line of vision to text. Now you have to keep it below the dash which takes your eyes off the road.

Ha, at least you get a one in three chance. It’s sort of like Russian roulette.

Great video though, props to those who made it. And it’s not just for teens, I’m sending it to my adult family and friends too.

So if you are texting while driving a smart car you may as well put a gun to your head?.... The "Not-so-Smart" car in a wreck.....

We need to encourage teens to start smoking again. It’s gotta be hard to hold a cigarette in one hand, and the steering wheel in the other hand, and text with the other hand.

Too bad it was a staged set. Of course the wrecks and carnage of speeding drivers and drunk drivers in horrible accidents never got through to me ——just saying. I drive safe for other reasons ( think insurance premiums)

Anyone caught texting and driving should just be beaten with a shovel. I’m sorry, but exactly how stupid is someone who texts and drives at the same time? And yet, I see people do it all the time. Perhaps they should just make special roads for idiots. I am SO sick and tired of avoiding these bone heads on the road.

you want to wake you kid up to the real world, sign them up for a ride-a-long with your local police department. Most departments allow anyone 14 or older with parental permission to ride. Even better, have them join the explorer program. Seeing it first hand up close will work better than any video.

Nanny state PSA’s are always so creative and well-done. These folks should get into the teen slasher movie racket while there’s still a market for it.

This is NOTHING compared to the films of actual accident scenes made by various state police departments during the 50s and 60s! The Ohio Highway Patrol ones were the goriest.

They typically started like this one does, showing the actions of the drivers leading up to the wreck, and then switching to the aftermath. Seeing real decapitated heads and mangled, bloody corpses, sure got our attention! One image has stuck with me my whole life: a policeman picking up the upper torso of a man who was laying face down, when the head was lifted, you saw that the front half was missing and only goop/brain was hanging from the skull.

These films made even the most macho among us queasy! I suppose that's why they're not shown to high schoolers anymore (we mustn't shock their delicate senses!)

A 20-year-old driver who police said was distracted by her iPod yesterday struck two young women - best friends - who had just walked out of Delaware County Memorial Hospital, killing one.

Nicole Gallo , 19, of Clifton Heights, died instantly.

What is so wrong with paying attention to what your doing ?

When people tell me how great they are at multi -tasking  it just tells me that they're at best mediocre at doing multiple things

Wow, check out the steering wheel, squished all the way back to the rear roof pillar. Also, I *hope* that was a spare tire sticking out the hatch - otherwise, it’s one of the front wheels.

It's not a matter of not taking “it” seriously. If you think that banning Inanimate Object A or Inanimate Object B is going to solve the problem, you're missing the point. Our culture has manufactured the most thoughtless, self-absorbed, oblivious generation the free world has ever known. The problem isn't their toys. The problem is THEM, and how they're being raised.

Besides, in the final analysis, they'll have done far more damage with their votes than they could ever dream of doing with their cars.

Our driver ed's course, we had to watch a videotape of relatives of people who were killed by drunk drivers, in addition to watching footage of actual highway catastrophes.

What they should do is graduate driver licenses on a scale. Age 15-16 (Red background on driver license) should only be allowed to drive during daytime hours and must have written parental permission if driving after that. Also should have mandatory car insurance.

Age 17-18 (Yellow background on driver license) should be probationary status where two speeding tickets or one drunk-driving penalty is immediate forfeiture of driver license. Mandatory car insurance as well

Age 19 and beyond (Green background on driver license) should be regular driver license.

PSA’s are typically artless, finger-wagging time-wasters made by talentless hacks with other people's money... with no measurable results or impact required. They're the essence of pointless feel-goodery.

The fact that we fund the utterly useless Ad Council drives me out of my mind.

Oh, yeah... I remember those driver safety films. Vivid images remain in my mind, all these years later. My wife's driver's ed class managed to miss most of the experience, though, when the biggest guy in the classroom (one of the football players, no less) passed out cold.

“Our driver ed’s course, we had to watch a videotape of relatives of people who were killed by drunk drivers,..”

When I took driver's ed in high school, they taught us how to drink responsibly; how many drinks (of each kind) it would take to make us legally drunk in accordance with our weights; how long it would take to eliminate each drink; how to drink at a party without getting drunk (pacing); the types of food that slow alcohol absorption; etc. We were tested on this stuff to make darn sure we knew it.

It's a far better system than what they do now!

“..the biggest guy in the classroom (one of the football players, no less) passed out cold.”

I can’t remember anyone actually passing out in my class, but our gym coach, who taught the course, told us it was OK if any of us had to put our heads down during the films. And Yeah, quite a few of the football jocks had to do so!
(I never had to put my head down, but I’m sure I closed my eyes a few times! LOL!)

I grew up during the shock gore films that they forced all the student body to watch. As I recall, I turned around and faced the other direction during the whole film.

Quite a few others did the same thing.

By the way this accident was in Brasil.
Was a frontal accident and the cause was not a text message, the cause was speed.
