"Voter IDs would hurt turnout"
Dallas Morning News ^ | July 25, 2009 | Mercedes Olivera (DMN columnist)

"...requiring voters to show some form of ID could send Texas to the end of the line in future national rankings because it would depress turnout among Latinos, the state's fastest-growing demographic group.

Anchía heard mountains of testimony about voter fraud as a member of the elections committee for three legislative sessions and as chairman of a subcommittee investigating voter fraud.

"Voter fraud exists in Texas, but voter impersonation does not," he said. Most of the voter fraud occurs with mail-in ballots, he said, but the voter ID bills introduced in the last regular session offered no remedy to combat this type of fraud.

It's estimated that requiring a photo ID to vote could potentially disenfranchise between 150,000 and 500,000 Texans, and these would typically be the elderly, members of ethnic groups, the poor and disabled, he said.

And it could especially affect Latinos because, in most cases, it takes an ID to get an ID. If you've never had a state driver's license, you need to show three forms of identification – including a birth certificate – in order to get one nowadays.

And for some Latinos along the border, where the use of midwives is commonplace, getting a birth certificate is not the norm.

Is 'can't get a birth certificate to get an ID to get an ID so it's racist to try to make me get one with a law that says I have to have a picture ID to vote' a new liberal meme? I haven't seen this excuse before, always heard the 'can't get to the DMV to get an ID, so I'll be disenfranchised even though I can go EVERYWHERE else in the state of Texas with no problem'...

I show my ID now. I don’t think I have to show it but I believe the law in this state requires them to ask.

Personally I think it should be required.

If someone is too lazy to get an ID, they should be too lazy to vote a few dozen times.

There, that's better.

because it would depress turnout among Latinos, the state's fastest-growing demographic group.

Well - I think this statement speaks for itself. Why would ANYONE fail to vote because of an ID requirement? Oh- because they have no ID. And why would they have no ID? Because they are not US Citizens. Gee - how hard is that? Only US Citizens are suppose to vote (and only vote once!!!! unlike ACORN's take).

And as always, the Race card again gets played. Hello - it is all about fair elections where only REAL Citizens vote (and vote once). It isn't about race, political views, or demographics. Election integrity. Period.

Always had to show my ID or my voter registration card to vote in Alaska, then I moved down here and was shocked when no ID was needed. Granted it is a very very small town and everyone knew about the family that moved here from there, but still.
On another note, I was very disappointed that only McCain was listed and not Sarah. I wanted to vote for her not him.

When I lived in Gainesville (Cooke Co) I needed to show one (mid term 2006 election). This is no longer the case?

Just think how much they could improve turnout if they let white guys vote 2, 3, 4 or 10 times. And let him register his blue tick hound to vote. Plus all his European relatives, including those who are deceased.

Why, I bet we could get 200% turnout. Wouldn't that be fantastic?

Well, MAKE IT THE NORM. Require anyone assisting in a live birth to register the birth with county gov. And fine/jail anyone who doesn't comply.

Crying out loud...You can't buy or apply some weed killers without being registered with the gov.

That’s the point. Non-citizens SHOULD be intimidated from voting. Jail time and deportation would do nicely.

what a load of political manure.

The author is throwing so many lies and hoping something sticks.

EVEN IN THIRD WORLD NATIONS, the registrar goes from village to village and records the new births. Why are midwives unlicensed? unregulated?

I don't have to show my ID to vote.

But then again, I used to be the local Republican Chairman and ran for mayor six years ago.

in florida, where the ID requirement has been in effect for DECADES, there is no problem with turnout.

ACORN has just focused on absentee ballot fraud commitment and teaching the ineligible how to vote provisionally.

This is not about ID this is about ease of fraud in Texas.

I’m not sure, all I know is that I didn’t have to show ID neither did my husband. Is it because this county (Sheridan) doesn’t require it or because they knew who we were? (even though we had never met) The Alaska license plates might have been a giveaway.

So there are 150-500K native born citizens who have reached voting age and never bothered to confirm and document their births and their citizenship? Until now they never bothered to get an SS number, a drivers license, employment, or enroll in school? Really?

Back in college I worked as an election judge, and if a person came in without an ID we’d just have them sign an affidavit prior to voting. Now, all the instances where I had to hand them the affidavit form were not what I would deem suspicious (deciding to vote whilst taking a break from a sweaty morning jog, live across the street from the designated poll place, etc.,) I still found it odd that ID’s were so unnecessary for such an important event. Besides, can’t you get in trouble with the law if you have no ID when asked to present it by a police officer?

Is it safe to assume the Democrats need these irresponsible idiots in the booths in order to maintain vitality? That’s pretty damn sad.

Thanks to the state-run-media, liberals are able to have the most asinine arguments taken seriously...over and over again.

Not only should voters have to show ID, they should have to show evidence of passing a civics class to prove they're competent to vote.

If you require I.D. for voting you would be impeding all those illegals from voting early and voting often. The illegal immigrant swing vote — getting Democrats elected for ages now.

Mexico to issue citizens national identity card.. (Completion date: 2012)

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2303681/posts

“Most Mexicans currently use their voter ID cards for identification. They contain a photo, signature and one fingerprint. They will continue to be issued.”

So exactly why can’t they carry them here when they vote, DMN?
