Here is a video report from Indiana that features U.S. military personnel sounding off about the ban on smoking in the military being considered. According to the report, if adopted, the ban would require all new recruits to quit smoking before enlisting, and would not allow smoking on military bases, in military vehicles, or onboard ships. Cigarettes would also no longer be sold in military facilities. In the report, one soldier says, "I don't agree with it. I think it's a waste of taxpayer's money to get involved with this." . . . . More big brother
Since 2006, I have been sending Stateside Copenhagen to Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan since the Exchange stuff is so crappy. In the future, it looks like I may have to order in bulk if military personnel can’t smoke.
Why don’t they just challenge the CIC?? (Who realy ISN’T the CIC)
Bam has figured out there is more than one way to destroy the US Military
CIC is the empirical example of “Do as I say, not as I do.”
Freepers know that I loath smoking...
That said, it is a legal activity and if a solder can give his life for his country he should be able to have a damn cigarette, cigar, pipe, etc...
Most basic training environments that I’m aware of ban smoking anyway and they’ve already banned smoking in most public places on bases.
If they want to keep others away from it fine, they’ve accomplished that already, but let the troops do their own thing on their personal time.
“More big brother”
Agree for sure. Besides, it seems sorta ridiculous to most Military guys and gals to be lectured on the hazards of smoking when they are sweating out getting their butts blown away by rpg’s, land lines, etc.
Commander in Chief can’t even quit?? 95% my a**. He’s an old coke head besides. How many cigarette smokers can say that....Not many I’ll bet!!
As if the military needed another reason to dislike liberals....
Great idea. Take freedom away from those who fight to protect ours.
More likely, a big way to piss off the folks who have the weaponry to really ruin your day.
I live fairly close to Ft. Riley. You sure can tell when the troops are getting ready to deploy. My local (dependable fresh supply) copenhagen outlets sell out fairly quickly. I don’t blame them. The stuff turns pretty bad with age. Personally, I flat refuse to buy stuff that is over 2 weeks dated. I can only imagine how old the stuff is by the time our boys get it overseas.
BTW, I was in Bolivia last year and ran out with 4 days left in country (some deviate stole my stash out of my suitcase). I resorted to chewing tobacco from cigarettes to get me by until I got stateside. I know that is bad but the addiction is tough.
I can’t believe these idiots in congress are messing with our troops on this silly issue. Crap, these guys are putting their lives on the line for us. If a smoke (or chew), keeps their nerves from fraying while in harm’s way, let them have it.
My .02 cents.

Although I agree that this is a foolish proposal, I don't see how it costs taxpayers, unless there's a provision for smoking-cessation treatments unmentioned in the article.
I meant ‘challenge the CIC’ the way the soldier did who did not want to deploy, recently
and the next thing you know they’ll be told what color underwear to wear

As long as marijuana remains illegal this won’t bother me one bit (BTW, I am a recovered nicotine addict).
Exactly my meaning! you couldn’t ask for a more patriotic individual and I hear the skivvies are going to the Smithsonian!
It is going to cost money to enforce the regulation in terms of manhours spent and documentation.
The Copenhagen for the overseas military market is packed in plastic cans like Skoal or other snuff. The waxed cardboard tins are like gold when you can get 'em!
True - and the uncalculated cost of people who won’t join the service if they have to quit smoking. When Anoreth was doing processing for the Coast Guard, she said that most of the guys joining the Army or Marines were smokers.
Great post. I try to keep the stuff moist by purchasing the most recent stuff I can. Then I wrap the tins in paper towel with a moist paper towel facing the metal side of the tin. After that, I place the two or four tins in a Ziploc bag. My Marine friends all say the Cope arrives in Iraq and Afghanistan in good shape.
Two weeks ago, I sent a package to Afghanistan containing 10 boxes of See’s Candies, magazines, Copenhagen and cigars (wrapped similarly to the Cope). Postage was $72.30 but my big worry was the condition of the chocolate. Apparently, everything arrived just fine according to an e-mail I received. However, it’s not likely they would tell me if the candy was a gooey mess or not since they know that those shipments would stop during the summer months if they informed me the candy had melted.
