Kristol: A Contrarian Take (Palin 2012)
The Weekly Standard ^ | July 3, 2009 | William Kristol

Posted on 07/03/2009 10:26:07 PM PDT by SolidWood

If Palin wants to run in 2012, why not do exactly what she announced today? It's an enormous gamble - but it could be a shrewd one.

After all, she's freeing herself from the duties of the governorship. Now she can do her book, give speeches, travel the country and the world, campaign for others, meet people, get more educated on the issues - and without being criticized for neglecting her duties in Alaska. I suppose she'll take a hit for leaving the governorship early - but how much of one? She's probably accomplished most of what she was going to get done as governor, and is leaving a sympatico lieutenant governor in charge.

And haven't conservatives been lamenting the lack of a national leader? Well, now she'll try to be that. She may not succeed. Everything rests on her talents, and on her performance. She'll be under intense and hostile scrutiny, and she'll have to perform well.

All in all, it's going to be a high-wire act. The odds are against her pulling it off. But I wouldn't bet against it.

I listened to her entire announcement. It was honorable, it was direct, and it punctuated the insane politics of our day...it also punctuated her personal commitment to fight, and to do so when it would not distract further from her job as Governor and the foundation she has built there.

I am proud of her and support her. She is a great American.

I think Sarah has just turned, like a fed-up mama Bear, on her detractors. She has put things in order, she has left them in the hands of capable people, and she has now turned to face her enemies directly.

...and I think they are going to be sorry. We have smelled the fear in them for a long time. Good on her!

I believe she will assist others greatly in 2010, and will run herself in 2012...and she has my full support.

GO SARAH GO!

SARAH PALIN TURNS TO CONFRONT HER DETRACTORS DIRECTLY

Palin was hired by the people of Alaska to do a job for 48 months. Palin cut and run 17 months early.

So, Bill Kristol likes quitters. LOL

So. Obama was elected to be a Senator and he rarely showed up, seldom voted and spent the last two years away from the job, campaigning for president.

What’s worse, someone that leaves the job honorably and in reliable hands or someone that is a slacker?

Palin does the people of
Alaska a great favor. She realizes that the relentless press that is trying to sink her as a politician is contrary to the interests of the people of Alaska and does the most wonderful honest thing a politician could do - pass the baton to her Lt. Governor.
Sarah has shown great courage in this decision.

So often, Bill Kristol has rubbed me the wrong way. He can be arrogant, condescending, belittling and sometimes acts like a David Frum with brains.

This piece had none of that. It was honorable, plain spoken and fair. I will never be a Weekly Standard kind of guy, but I think Kristol knows what the stakes are. The Frums, Steve Schmidts and Peggy Noonans do not.

Maybe, maybe not. Mark Levin says same as bill.

As a citizen of IL, I resented a first-term six-year senator starting to run for pres a year after he was elected. He was only present 141 days in the senate, and I am sure many of his trips were on my nickel. So, I appreciate her directness with Alaskan voters and hope she will continue as a leader for the conservative movement.

Isn't Alaska an "at will" employment state? Either party can part ways without a problem.

And if she spent the time to groom the Lt. Gov for the position, and leaves him strong enough to overcome the Dem opposition, and gave 2 weeks notice...

Seems like you must be a partisan for someone else. Romney?

Just listened to her speech for the first time. She stated:

1. She doesn’t want to waste millions of Alaska taxpayer dollars while she continues to fight against the baseless ethics charges. 18 so far this year.
2. With her it’s not politics as usual. It’s not about personal aggrandizement but what’s right for Alaska.
3. Sometimes you can fight the better fight from the outside.
4. She will continue to fight for the things she believes in, smaller government and governong from the bottom up.
5. Lots of good candidates out there who share her vision she wants to help immediately.

To me she made it clear she is gearing up rather than down. She will stay politically engaged knowing the incoming governor shares her vision and can accomplish everything from this point forward she could accomplish all the while she can be freed up to fight from the outside.

She gave no indication she has any intention of letting up, instead everything she said gave the complete opposite impression. She is going to be very active from this point forward and she won’t be hamstrung with a governorship and fending off baseless ethics charges.

“Palin was hired by the people of Alaska to do a job for 48 months. Palin cut and run 17 months early.”

Gov. Palin has done a great job for the state of Alaska. Just on the possibility that you have not noticed what has been going on, the MSM, late night self proclaimed comedians, democrats have been viciously attacking her and her family. The frivolous ethics charges (I think there were about 13 or so) have all been dismissed. But in defending herself, the Gov. has had to pay out approx 300K and the state of Alaska about 130K in legal fees.
Not only were these slimeballs going after her, but they even went as scounderously low as to attack her family.
When she is out of office, she will be able to fight back when she is attacked.
“Cut and Run”? This is an absurd statement, considering what is happening.

Her explanation is as clear as glass. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out. Read the transcript. Hard to fulfill your duties and do the people of Alaska right when you are bombarded by erroneous charges that have to be answered. Why...because the libs are bent on destroying her and if Alaska was to be collateral damage, what did they care? She wasn’t going to let their game continue. The best thing for Alaska was to “pass the ball”. Best thing for America is for her to use her capital to help get conservatives in the greatest number in Congress. Lord willing, come 2010 some of the bleeding may stop. Now what are you going to do to stop the bleeding?
