A Lot Of Sarah Palin In The Lower 48
Forbes ^ | 7/3/2009 | Carl Lavin

Posted on 07/03/2009 5:42:18 PM PDT by bruinbirdman

Alaska will be seeing less of Sarah Palin now that she is resigning as governor, but the lower 48 states will be seeing a lot more of her--not in the media capitals of New York or Los Angeles, but in smaller markets, including towns in New Hampshire, Iowa and other states that can give presidential hopefuls a leg up in a primary race.

Palin's support doesn't come from big-city elites, anyway. As one of them, Ann Marlowe, wrote in a column for Forbes.com last year, "Why Elite Women Hate Palin":

People who become writers and intellectuals and artists tend not to want power that badly or pursue it that obsessively, which is what makes us interesting and fun--and makes few of us household names. Success at the Palin level in politics or business takes a level of blinkered self-confidence that comes mainly to (a very few) men.

Suzanne Garment captured the cultural divide in her assessment of the Biden-Palin debate, recognizing that Palin's popularity comes from the fact that "her words and rhythms of speech really did mirror those of her audience."

In terms of numbers, and especially in the numbers that count--those of likely Republican primary voters, there are many on Palin's side of the divide. Conservatives growing angrier every day at Obama's leadership are hungry for a strong voice. Many of these voters are already proud Palin supporters or at least willing to listen.

In person, Palin wins over right-leaning audiences. Away from the pulls of Alaska politics (including continuing ethics investigations), she will have many opportunities to build on that support. Reihan Salam analyzed that Palin appeal in a December column:

Highbrow Republicans and suburban moderates wince at the merest mention of her name. Despite her obvious political skills, conservative thinkers like David

Hehehe...she's turned the libs on their ear again. Scambling and whining about what Sarah is going to do.

Oh are they scared of her.

I listened to her entire announcement. It was honorable, it was direct, and it punctuated the insane politics of our day...it also punctuated her personal commitment to fight, and to do so when it would not distract further from her job as Governor and the foundation she has built there.

I am proud of her and support her. She is a great American.

I think Sarah has just turned, like a fed-up mama Bear, on her detractors. She has put things in order, she has left them in the hands of capable people, and she has now turned to face her enemies directly.

...and I think they are going to be sorry. We have smelled the fear in them for a long time. Good on her!

I believe she will assist others greatly in 2010, and will run herself in 2012...and she has my full support.

GO SARAH GO!

Sarah’s leaving office to pursue wealth, not higher office.
Someone who resigns amid scandals and investigations has no chance of getting elected to anything again.
At least not as a Republican.

Well conidering the complaints and investigations just keep coming then by your logic she would have to stay in office the rest of her life to prove she has a chance to be elected to higher office.

I don’t buy an upcoming scandal, could be wrong but I don’t think so. I think she is pissed, feels like she has put Alaska on the right path, has faith in her replacement and is gonna kick some butt and take names. I don’t know if she is going to go for the nomination or not but I think she has a plan. I am keeping my fingers crossed that she is gonna wreak havoc, hell hath no fury than an angry conservative woman. I’m just saying.

You think someone who resigns under the weight of investigations and public scrutiny can get elected to anything again?
A person has to campaign to get elected, remember.
And someone who couldn’t handle their last job isn’t going to win higher office.
Anyone Palin runs against will now say she’s unstable, she’s flaky, she can’t handle the pressure, and she resigned under a cloud of investigation.
How many votes do you think that kind of rap would lose?
You honestly think she wouldn’t lose any?
She already proved last year that she has fewer people willing to come out and vote for her than 0bama does.
You think resigning after 2½ years in office will get her MORE supporters, not less?
It wouldn’t take but the loss of faith in her by a small percentage to ensure she’s finished for good. And any politician who resigns sees the public quickly lose faith in them in significant numbers.

You are historically clueless and politically naive. From Wikipedia:"Drawing on remnants of the old Whig party, and on disenchanted Free Soil, Liberty, and Democratic party members, he was instrumental in forging the shape of the new Republican Party. In a stirring campaign, the Republicans carried Illinois in 1854 and elected a senator. [He] was the obvious choice, but to keep the new party balanced, he allowed the election to go to an ex-Democrat Lyman Trumbull. At the Republican convention in 1856, [he] placed second in the contest to become the party's candidate for Vice-President."

This was after leaving congress and going back into private practice. People do make political comebacks, and what it takes is grassroots popularity. It worked for this man...

You guys are having an emotional fit and gloom and doom menalitis before what is going to happen. She will be campaigning for 48 states and her message will get out. This decision was not made over night. To compare this to Sanford is absolute bufoonery.

She was exonerated of ALL of the frivolous ethics complaints. You are parroting the mantra of the left that "it's the seriousness of the charge that counts". I watched her press conference today and it made me realize that she's the most ethical politician (oxymoron?) to come down the pike in a very long time. She's squeaky clean in my book, and if she runs in 2012, she can count on my vote.

There isn’t an “upcoming scandal” necessarily, just an ever increasing build up of existing ones. Palin is under investigation for all kinds of things in Alaska. It doesn’t matter if they have merit or were political. What matters is the perception she has now created by resigning in large part because of them. Half the people will now believe the charges. That’s a bad starting position.

Another scandal is her refusal to take 0bama’s stimulus money. Sounds good, right? Well, the problem is the Alaska legislature is about to unanimously override her veto on that. People in Alska — including her own political mentor — are turning on her, accusing her of seeking out the limelight in the lower 48 (sound familiar?) over serving the interests of Alaska. This move confirms it.

And apparently Sarah doesn’t realize that the next presidential election is still more than 3 years away.
After her erratic behavior in and in leaving office, the GOP is going to have moved on from her long before the next primaries.

She has new complaints piling up by the day.
Palin supporters are stuck in September 2008.

Most of the new complaints revolve around her jetting around the US on personal political business during office hours. Seems that’s a violation in Alaska.

That’s also a big part of why she’s resigning now.

I believe Sarah had cleared all those visits, and NONE of the complaints have been given any creedance by the courts. The ethics complaints are simply designed to keep her name in the media attached to negative news.

There are plenty of other Governors in this country who fly around attending meetings and gatherings. I doubt that Alaska's rules are any different from those of most other states.

She didn't resign "under the weight of investigations and public scrutiny". NONE of the ethics lawsuits have gone against her. She's been cleared on every single one of them. She resigned so that the citizens of AK would no longer have to pay for the time needed by her and her staff to gather the documents and evidence needed to fight those frivilous lawsuits. It was certainly a waste of her time and taxpayer funds.

Staying in office, especially if she wasn't running for re-election would only invite even more of those nuisance lawsuits. I believe people who are fair-minded will understand this. Of course, the liberals and Republicans who don't like her will continue to talk her down, but she'll be free now to reply.
