Tea Parties Need Focus - Oppose Breath Tax

Critics of the tea parties held in April noted that participants lacked a common theme. They carried signs dealing with a variety of issues making it difficult for simple minded critics to understand what was going on.

Critics don't understand that protesters felt that government wasn't interested in them except as a source of funds for government programs that sometimes have little or no apparent value.

The original Boston Tea Party had a specific theme - a symbol of what colonists felt was wrong. Colonists were tired of people an ocean away making decisions without considering their input. The new Tea Tax was just the latest evidence that government didn't consider them important.

The carbon dioxide tax Congress is considering provides a good symbol of how politicians in Washington ignore the common people in their desire to benefit the rich and crooked. As I noted in the previous post, the whole idea of carbon taxes and carbon trading are part of a scam developed at the corrupt Enron corporation. Lawrence Solomon reports that Enron for all practical purposes wrote the Kyoto Treaty.

Enron may be gone, but other companies are waiting to take advantage of the scam Enron's Ken Lay set up.

The proposed CO2 tax provides a strong symbol of an unjustified tax to protest against. Future Tea Party participants should carry signs saying something like "Say No to Enron's Breath Tax." A few participants might bring CO2 fire extinguishers or some dry ice and buckets of water so they could release CO2 into the air.

If we're want people to take tax protests seriously, we need focus. I oppose abortion, but the issue shouldn't be raised at the "tea parties" because liberals can then say its just about conservative issues in general. This proposed carbon tax is the worst tax ever, and I think more people would respond if we told then that, just like the first George Bush, Obama lied when he said there would be no new taxes on the working class.

The tea parties were fine the way they were. The common theme was opposition to runaway government.

Our opponents tried to claim that the Tea Parties were merely tax protests and we were just greedy Republican not wanting to pay "our fair share". The size of government and all the businesses it is taking over is a much better focus for future Tea Parties.

The common theme was opposition to runaway government.

I'm not so sure that has been articulated in a very coherent way. Just my 2 cents.

The original Boston tea Party was against the “corporate bailout” of the East India Company.

No, the Income Tax is the worst tax ever. The Tea Parties should focus on reforming the Tax Code and implementing the Fair Tax.

If we're want people to take tax protests seriously, we need focus.

You want focus? Focus on preserving what is left of the middle class - that was the common theme I saw at the Tea Parties - a bunch of regular working folks not wanting liberalism to do to our country what has been done to Argentina.

In that regard, focusing on just one aspect of Obama's agenda would be a mistake, because there are five other killer agendas that are capable of doing the job as well.

I disagree. By the time the Dems are done, we'll have both a sales tax AND an income tax. And beyond that, the agenda to save this country is far greater than just the method of taxation.

Stick to raising electoral fear in the guts of centrist Dems by opposing the liberal agenda and getting your neighbors up in arms and out in the streets in a middle class revolt against the avarice of all levels of government.

More than 50 years ago an old man that was retired railroader station master said that “Some day we would have to wear a meter around our neck to pay for the air we breath”. It is amazing that they want to make us pay for the CO2 we exhale.

The method of collecting taxes doesn’t mean much if government overcollects the taxes and then goes hog wild spending them on what they want. (out of control government)

The highway funds by themselves are a beautiful example of what’s really wrong. The government collects hundreds of billions of dollars for the highways and congressmen and senators siphon it off for their own pet projects. For instance, Carl Levin wanting transportation funding to save the old Tiger stadium.

Fair tax may be a wonderful idea for all I know but the disease will still exist. To cure the disease we need to regain control of government.
