Wesley J. Smith: Persona Non Grata People May Hold Key to Cancer Cure (Down Syndrome)

Well this is ironic: People with Down syndrome--against whom a concerted pogrom is being waged to wipe off the face of the earth via genetic testing and eugenic abortion or infanticide--may hold the key to an effective treatment for cancer. From the story:

Scientists may have solved the mystery of why people with Down's syndrome seem to have a lower risk of some cancers.

The extra copy of chromosome 21 which causes Down's appears to contain a gene that protects from solid cancerous tumours, tests on mice suggest. The gene seems to interfere with signals a tumour relies on to grow. The finding raises hope of new ways to prevent and treat cancer.
At least some catch an important ancillary point to this story:
Writing in the journal, the researchers, led by Dr Sandra Ryeom, said: "It is, perhaps, inspiring that the Down's syndrome population provides us with new insight into mechanisms that regulate cancer growth and, by so doing, identifies potential targets for tumour prevention and therapy."
Will that slow down our drive to identify and destroy these precious human beings before they can be born? Not a chance. We talk a good game of "diversity," but we don't really mean it.

People with Down syndrome--against whom a concerted pogrom is being waged to wipe off the face of the earth via genetic testing and eugenic abortion or infanticide...

This is correct. Out of fear of the John Edwards Trial Lawyer Wing of the democrat party, many doctors are coerced into recommending abortion if Down's is discovered in utero (usually after an amniocentesis in a 35 year old or older mother. Think Sarah Palin).

Yet, these are the sweetest, happiest children on earth. And the Big Guy has a purpose for us all, even the humblest and most defenseless.

There is no need for amnio tests for Downs any longer. A simple blood test is available. My wife’s OB ran the blood test (and charged for it) despite being told we did not want it. Grrrrr.

I have yet to meet a Down’s Syndrome kid that wasn’t a more valuable member of society than any amount of welfare cheats, crackheads, and “homies” of all kinds. Most do their best in life and bring out the kindness in others.

A good measure of one's character is how one feels about and treats those humble and defenseless.

My aunt is a liberal democrat....as some of you know. Well she knows a couple whom retardation runs in the man's family. His uncle was retarded, and worked a menial job his adult life. The man was kind, but did have poor hygiene in body and clothing. He has since died. Well this couple has tested every pregnancy and one was found “defective” that is to say they would have had a baby just like this man's uncle and thus chose to abort it. My aunt looked at me triumphantly and said "they did the right thing, there was no need to bring another baby like that man's uncle in the world". Now everyone, I used to ride the city bus, before I got my car with this man. He never bothered anyone, from what I know he did his job at the baseball stadium and he did it well. There we no complaints. Other than his body odor, which is the problem of whom ever was his caretaker. He was not a serial killer! If you left him alone he did not bother you. Why do liberals want them dead in the uterus? I just don't get it. This is mean, but I wonder if my Aunt would have been better off dead in the uterus, she does not seem happy with the life she does have!

Somehow the left has simply adopted the philosophy that some lives are not “worth living”.

Their general defense of this is something along the lines that medical advances keep people alive who shouldn’t be and they are just removing this and “allowing” the person to die. However, in cases like Down Syndrome and other mental disabilities this is a totally false premise.
