Friday, Saab filed for bankruptcy protection from it's creditors. Saab is a Swedish-based subsidiary of GM. This move came after the Swedish government refused GM's begging for a bailout. This is very strange situation. Socialist Sweden is refusing to bailout their automotive industry. Allegedly, capitalist America is throwing billions of taxpayer dollars down the automotive bailout sinkhole. I never thought I would say this, but I hope our government finds the wisdom of Sweden. That really left a bad taste in my mouth.

I had a 99E Turbo convertible (5 spd) in the late 80’s..5 years, 120k+ miles..one of the BEST cars I’ve ever owned..loved it..solid as a rock..never had a single problem with it..AND..I taught BOTH my daughters how to drive on it..
You know, I think we are damn close to going over a cliff. Damn close.
Sorry..somebody had to do it.
BTW I stopped being interested in SAAB after the 93...Oh the 96 was OK but the 93..now that was INTERESTING!

Saab’s were very cool and unique cars. Then GM bought them and turned them into generic automobiles.
Shouldn’t they be able to reorganize and continue operations?
I remember the first SAABs imported to the U.S., which were Spartan little cars with 2-stroke 3-cylinder engines driving the front wheels (when front-wheel drive was still unusual).

Speaking with someone with a multi-national auto supplier the other day, the bulk of their next rounds of layoffs will be in the U.S. because of the work rules in Europe won't allow them to let people go, ditto that the Swedes because they are European. Time is of the essence, so it was probably quicker for GM to stop the bleeding on that artery this way.Their is the rumor that one reason Ford may be trying to dump Volvo is because of their work rules. BTW local Detroit media report Swedish law doesn't actually call it bankruptcy, but that maybe inside baseball.....
That's the truth! There are not many cars left in the world with a unique "look". Saabs, Volvos, Mercedes all look pretty much like Toyotas. I can't even tell what make most cars are without an emblem.
My cousin bought a Saab in the mid-80’s.
Sweet, fancy looking thing.
About 2 weeks later the front right wheel assembly completely collapsed in a parking lot.
got rid of it soon after.
A friends brother loves Saabs though. He owns about 5.
Gotta love the ignition key placement..
