Every public school sixth-grader in the city is guaranteed a spot at San Francisco State University under a program launched today by Mayor Gavin Newsom.

"Guaranteed" might be a bit of a strong word here, since the students still have to meet basic eligibility requirements in order to get into the university. But the idea is to provide enough resources at every public school that all 3,500 current sixth-graders will meet those requirements by the time they graduate in 2015. Which would mean, by the way, that the school district aims to get every single sixth grader's GPA up to 3.0.

For today's public schools, that's the easy part. ;)

We are rapidly turning into a country where nobody fails.

God help us once that is complete.

This plan sounds like it has great FUBAR potential.

The real issue here is that San Francisco is uninhabitable for young children. There are very few of them. It is the least family friendly city in the USA.

Will there be enough slots available for all these students come 2015? Not that all students will have a 3.0 or want to attend that university, but they better make sure that there are enough desks for those promised.

Everything he does is to help him win higher office. He continually grandstands. He has the gay vote in his back pocket from here to forever.

In SF it is possible that perhaps all students will just be given their straight A report card adn graeduated. Then whwen they actually hit a place of semi-learning they will scream racism. Gavin Newsom is a clown who is confused about his sexuality. BUT he is one of the most dangerous guys around. Too bad they keep electing him

There are way more colleges now than students. I have to wonder if this was done to prevent having to layoff/downsize teachers at the college.

As far as grade inflation, we see it all the time in GA which has the hope scholarship. AS long as you graduate from high school with a B average, the state pays your college tuition at a state school (I believe the program has been expanded so GA will also pay for Auburn and Clemson tuitions.)

The dirty secret of the hope scholarship is that a huge number of students lose their it their first year in college, because you have to maintain a B average in college to keep it.

Oh come on, the Folsom Street Fair is just so much fun for the kids, don't ya know. /sarc

"The twin girls who were also dressed for the event wore identical lace blouses, floral bonnets and black leather collars purchased from a pet store.

Fathers Gary Beuschel and John Kruse watched over them closely. They were proud to show the twins off."
