>"Why on earth would 168 leading republicans in the RNC pick “the most moderate candidate” after such a huge defeat of the centrist, moderate McCainiac’s Disease in 2008?""

Can't have Costello upstaging Abbot, now can they.

I'm out. Sarah was the twilights last gleaming. It's gonna be a cold one for a few years.

Well, if Steele was the most moderate candidate, he be more moderate than Duncan. So, he joined the Whitman group. I never believed that said anything about him. Reagan belonged to such groups also. I would have liked Blackwell, but I think Dawson would have been a total moderate.

Where do you get the moderate label for Michael Steele? If it is from the article, give the rest of us with brains a chance.

Pushing conservatives out is a RAT mantra which is not happening. Reaching out to other groups — he is right on. Reagan had coalitions to win elections and that’s what we need.

Don’t care what the ideology if the person is ‘my way or no way’ they need to take a hike. No one is going to get 100% of what they want in a candidate and to demand perfection is ludicrous.

BTW, so nice of you to sign up in January to post this garbage.

>> Do you think the election of moderate Michael Steele to run the republican party is a move to kick the conservatives overboard? <<

No, if Bush's guy Mike Duncan had been RE-elected as chairman, that would have been a move to kick conservatives overboard.

Steele is a conservative and I've never heard him referred to as a "moderate" until he was selected as chairman. Kind of how Mike Huckabee was always seen as a great conservative until the moment he got in the way of Fred Thompson's bid for President, then suddenly he was a "socialist"

Lots of history revisionists here on FR it seems.

"I think the election of Michale Steele advances moderation in the GOP". -----------------------------------

Doesn't that mean "go along to get along"?

Thanks for some sanity on this thread. They don’t even give the guy a chance. I am so sick and tired of my way or I wiil trash, that I want to scream.

Not even giving him a chance. If the head of RNC is going to automatically exclude a group, then he isn’t the person that should be leading.

Bet a lot of the hand wringers are not even Republican and others have left the Party so much I have lost count. This is what someone wrote about Michael Steele, posted his own work, and the hand wringers and naysayers take the bait. Amazing as when they take AP articles for facts and when confronted with real facts, ignore.

Any move to the left to incorporate the liberal agenda, then I am leaving the GOP.

“The Wall Street Journal also says the Steele pick is a hard move to the left, writing: “GOP leaders sought to broaden the battered party’s ideological and regional appeal beyond its conservative, Southern base…His moderate views and charisma could help the party combat the impression that it is insensitive to minorities, working people and those with divergent views on social and economic issues. He’s also likely to bring more openness and diversity to the RNC”

Oh great.

Gee, now RINOs can claim to be more diverse and open.

Huckabee was never a conservative in the first place. He and his ideas should be flushed.

Educate myself? Thanks for the condescension. “Hard move to the left?” Michael Steele? Who wrote that line? Not the WSJ. They don’t seem to know him all that well, do they.

His speech to the GOP congressmen yesterday was a good one, I think if anyone can draw people pack to the GOP Steele can. The alternative, on the last ballot, was one that truly would have played into the term “Country Club Republicans” and made us a laughing stock for the next go-round.

Aren’t they both anti-abortion .. which would be a major match with Steele.

Without an ideology the GOP is nothing.

I've know for years that many "republicans" only participate as a means to ensure more personal financial gain. They've needed us in the past, they don't today.

I hope the liberals bankrupt each and every one of them!

Did you post under another name? The listed poster is shown as registering in January 2009. Holding dual identities strikes me as fraudulent, not a conservative virtue.

So what is the solution? We restrict the GOP to white, male, Anglo-Saxon evangelicals over the age of 50? That’s a helluva way to win elections.

A ‘my way or the hiway’ attitude seeking 100% philosophical purity will be the deathknell of conservatism on the American political landscape. The purists who’ve elected no one - because no one can meet their criteria - can sit back and cry because none of their agenda has been adopted.

So, yeah, I’m a cop out. I’ll take 80% instead of 0% any day of the week.

What is it about his positions that have you labeling him “moderate”?
