Piston Free Engines Versus High Efficiency Diesel Engines like Ecomotors
Next Big Future ^ | Oct 8, 2008 | Brian Wang

Posted on 10/08/2008 1:40:54 PM PDT by decimon

Piston free engines could achieve efficiencies of 50% which is almost double a regular gas combustion engine. However, new super efficient diesel engines could be even better, plus diesels would be more familiar to the market place.

Rest In Peace, old friend, your work is finished.....

If you want ON or OFF the DIESEL ”KnOcK” LIST just FReepmail me.....

This is a fairly HIGH VOLUME ping list on some days.....

Even though you quoted the title of the article correctly, the title of the article is wrong. It should read "Free Piston Engines..". Its about engines in which the piston is not connected to a crankshaft. See article for more.

Very interesting ideas here. I think technology will lead us out of our energy problems, not the Ludditism of the Left.

Ever go to some place that said “Free Alcohol” but when you went inside it was alcohol free ?

I used to drive piston free cars for 15 years. They were Rx7’s and I had to replace the engine in every one at least once and even got the time down to 2.5 hours from hood up to running car.
They get horrible mileage too; but you can rev to 10k every time if you don’t mind hearing the over rev buzzer going off. The 2nd gen ones had a rev limiter which stopped that fun.

Interesting concept. Keeping the magnets below the Curie temperature could be a problem, but problems can be solved...

Not “Piston Free”, “Free Piston”. BIG difference.

That was the rotary or Wankle Engine. Not the same technology. However, it still seems like a good idea.

It should read "Free Piston Engines.."

Yeah, I saw that. Good blog but the blogger seems to not worry much about typos and the like.

I thought wanker enginers were inefficient

Not if your hands are opposed and with a stiff rod between.

"Ram air cooling?"

Looks a lot like my '63 turbo charged, air cooled, opposed piston Corvair.

Wankel engines are being used in Mazda race cars (GT Series, American Le Mans). Very competitive

I like the Wankel, cause it’s an interesting concept/engine-design. I like Diesels, `cause, let’s face it, they’ve got some great efficiency.

A guy who I was in high school with back in the 80's went through a couple of RX 7's due to engine problems. He loved them still.

My Rx-7 lasted beyond 200,000 miles. Used a little oil by design, but was a great powerplant. I got over 20 mpg with it. It was an excellent car.

The idea of using a hydraulic accumulator and hydraulic slave motors for wheel propulsion, rather than a purely mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels, is actually the much more exciting idea presented in the “green car” site. This design would allow much more flexibility in stop-and-go like a package delivery vehicle, while delivering much better overall fuel efficiency. There would still be an “engine-off” part of the cycle (contributing in large part to the operating economy), as well as using the system as a much more efficient braking apparatus than friction-pad brakes, as that would regenerate the hydraulic pressure decreased by the process of acceleration.

My idea was to put a hydraulic slave motor on each wheel, with a sensor to divide the demand on each wheel, eliminating the need for differentials altogether. Same deal for substituting for friction-pad brakes. For lower-speed, high-torque demands, there would be a planetary gearset that would provide the torque amplification, which would shift from the lower ratio to the direct connection as speed increased and the torque demands fell.

We are nowhere near done finishing the potential for engineering surface transportation.

I hope that's right. I like the idea of hydraulic assist like Ford was going to do with the F150. I don't know enough about your idea to have an opinion but it does looks interesting.

Remove spaces at first and last of the example before and after the “<” and “>”, I had to put those in there to keep the computer from trying to interpret them as HTML commands......

That particular example looks like:

I realize this thread is passe, but I have a question about this engine. What kind of PTO does it have?

It will most certainly run, but how would its energy become work?

PTO is electrical, not mechanical. The piston moves magnets back and forth thru wired coils, creating electrical energy...........

I have flown with an 0320-H2ad engine in front of me swinging a prop. The mind boggles if this were applied to a no stroke wankel engine.
