Fred Thompson digs Sarah Palin. And he doesnt much like the way the liberals and the press (I know, redundant) have treated her. But Fred also has no doubt shes up to the task.
When John McCain selected Governor Sarah Palin, as his running mate, the Democrats and their far-left constituency let out a primal scream that could be heard from sea to shining sea. How dare he choose someone that they and their pals in the media had not had a chance to vet (i.e. libel, slander, and otherwise and otherwise eviscerate). Ah, but it was not too late. These seekers of a new kind of politics poured torrents of malicious abuse upon her and her family.
Plane loads of scandal mongers, lawyers and other truth seekers became more numerous in Alaska than the polar bear, as they rallied local Democrats and disgruntled Republicans to their cause.
Here was a woman who chose to have children and a career. Aging Washington socialites weighed in with newly discovered sensitivity for mothers with careers outside the home. Here was a woman who became upset because her ex-brother-in-law had tasered her nephew and threatened her father. The Democrats and their friends had to save the country from a woman like this.
Governor Palins every comment was scrutinized by the media and judged against what Jefferson or Lincoln might have said. Never mind that her counterpart, the 30-year-Washington-veteran Joe Biden, apparently is unaware that America relies upon coal for a lot of its electricity or that he recently referred to a top level U.S. officials visit to Iran that never happened. Thats just Joe being Joe protected by the sheer number of his gaffes and the fact that he is Barack Obamas running mate.

Another one for the FDT ping list?
How dare [McCain] choose someone that they and their pals in the media had not had a chance to vet
Someone should have vetted Gwen Ifill.
Or, even better, Ifill herself should have disclosed she had written a book that stands to sell better if Obama wins.
I heard about her pro obammmma book this morning. why is she going to moderate ANYTHING is beyond me.
Wonder if Fred is on McCain’s short list for Attorney General or USSC? Just my musings.
I wish he was on the short list for President.
This is chock full of great one liners for her for her debate.
Hey Joe, if experience and advanced degrees matter how come Raines and corporate wall street CEO’s didn’t recognize until it was too late that they were bankrupting their own companies???
Yea, me too ... but that’s not to be. Don’t think in 4 or 8 years either.
I’ve noticed Dobbs has a fondness for Palin. I just wish he’d come out for McCain. McCain should go on Dobbs show or let him interview Sarah Palin.
I think it's telling that a person thinks there is 57 states, but am more interested in the types of people he has associated with for 30 years. It shows he is more comfortable with America haters than patriots. His judgment is always to hate America rather than look at its bright points. Maybe, given the chance, Obama would have thought about it and gone back to his grade school days in Indonesia and remember we have 50 states, but that isn;t as important as believing that Free Market Capitalism is wrong and Hugo Chavez is a nice man that we just don't understand. Biden has been in 3 presidential runs and has been rejected all 3 times for a reason. His gaffs are a serious problem, but the bigger problem is his so called "experience" has always produced wrong results. Being wrong on every issue, but being very confident in your answer doesn't help.
Sarah may stumble or may make a gaffe, but she has shown good instincts on issues we know about. The question is about her judgment in a crisis. Will her instincts lead her to do the right thing, or the expedient thing. Choosing a candidate is always about judging character. If all we needed was a person that followed the polls, we could elect a computer that was fed overnight polls and focus group results.
Every candidate that wins is tested, usually very soon after election. Kennedy at the Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis, Eisenhower with the U2 shoot down, Carter and the hostage crisis, Bush 41 in Kuwait, Bush 43 on 9/11, Clinton with the first WT Center bombing or the Blackhawk down in Somalia, or the attack on the Cole, etc. The question that we all need answered by the candidates is what they would do in a situation that no one can even think of right now. Clinton showed you could attack our soil and warships and he would do nothing. Bush had to pay the price for Clinton's choices.
Sarah Palin could be a Dixie Chick or Margret Thatcher, we don't yet know, but deciding she is unfit because of a gaffe or little knowledge on an obscure subject won't tell us much about what she would do if Israel is attacked and they ask for our help or China tried to bankrupt our economy.
Instead of asking what the capital of Timbuktu is, I might ask what she would do in a possible situation in N. Korea or Pakistan and decide by her answer if it is reasonable. Obama has plenty of time and advisor's to tell him there are only 50 states, but who will tell him that a child that is aborted and is still alive has Constitutionally protected rights? Who will tell him that by his decision to kill the baby after it's born sets a precedent that could mean the government could decide that blacks are inferior people and have less rights than others, aka Dred Scott? Or bedridden patients have nothing to live for so we should end their lives to end their misery, aka Terri Schiavo. Live breathing people either have inalienable rights or they don't. Flawed character shows itself in more ways than just the decision at the moment.
We have a mantra that is often repeated but seldom pondered, "We are a nation of laws". The reason we are a nation of laws is to prevent making up decisions as we go, but to rely on the judgment of others that pondered and discussed the right thing to do when the decision wasn't imminent. If Sarah Palin shows good judgment and meets the requirements of the Constitution, then she is qualified to fill the office. To require that she know the history of Croatia or some other hell hole, is the purview of her advisors. What she does with that knowledge will be the key.
I see a lot of conservative men pundits being attracted to Sarah. That is why I think she is going to draw a lot of male voters as well as women voters. A lot of women vote for good-looking men just on looks, so I’ll bet there are a lot of men out there, too, who will do the same thing. They won’t care that she has a mind as well.
