Thoughts on THE SPEECH: Part Two
HotelSierra blog ^ | 04-SEP-2008 | Yanni.Znaio

Posted on 09/03/2008 10:19:20 PM PDT by Yanni.Znaio

Now that I've had time to catch my breath and settle down a bit, I thought I'd write a bit more about tonight.

For historical reasons, my political heroes are Ronald Reagan and Winston Churchill. Two rather ordinary individuals, who happened to be in particular places at specific times, and, when faced with extraordinary challenges, rose to greatness in order to deal with them.

History would be very different had either of these individuals not been where they were, when they were. And our lives are incomparably better because of them both.

Tonight I had the funniest feeling that we may have just watched the beginning of another person in the right place, at the right time, with the right character to rise to the occasion.

Because if Sarah Palin becomes Vice-President, I fully believe that she will be President after that, given her dynamism, principles and authenticity.

And she could change the entire direction of the Republican Party: Away from being "Democrat-Lite" and back to the principles of smaller and less intrusive government-- what would be termed "small-l" libertarianism in today's terms, and classical liberalism in formal political jargon.

(See "The Road to Serfdom" for a book which uses liberal and liberalism in that manner- it was written in 1942 and I consider it to be one of the most significant books of the Twentieth Century.)

In other words, what damn near everybody else in the Republican Party has forgotten about.

Don't worry about the slings and arrows of outrageous journalists. She proved once and for all tonight that Sarah Palin can take care of her-own-self.

And a special note to the PUMAs: I hope you were just as delighted with tonight's speech as I was.

Category Five to say the least.

As we'd say in the South: She done us proud.

Gotta tell you, this sure beats that “Reporting For Duty” crap Kerry came up with at the 2004 DNC.

I had tears in my eyes

my wife and I too.....

anyone with a heart or kids would have to....her love for her family seems real

everytime they would show everyone tending to the little baby, my wife would bawl...especially at the end.

You know, the sappiest men I know are also the ones who everybody thinks are the old, sourpuss, grouches. Hubby and I shed a tear or two as well. :-)

amen

i am stereotypical middle aged southern chauvinist male with a lot of life experience all over the world and 5 kids from toddler to twenty

and I know a lot of guys like me...all knuckledraggers who you'd love to have behind you in a barfight

and to a man, everyone loves Sarah Palin including most of us who have reservations over Mccain and amnesty.

She has overnight changed the dynamics. She represents everything to a tee that we hold dear and cherish...and in a poignant way worth fighting for and protecting...her sort of ...like she embodies something to us....this is hard to explain to folks but my wife gets it when I try to verbalize it.....it feels very emotional

Were she Queen, she and more importantly what she represents would be worth fighting and dying for.

My only complaint is she's not Southern lol...but her family is from Missouri ...maybe the southern part...lol

anyhow Alaska ain't exactly shabby and still produces rugged like minded folk

I would never thought I could support a typical woman like this and all that gender talk blah blah blah...but dang, she is a piece of work.

I've never seen anything like this in my 50 years.

I agree. I’m sixty five and a bit jaded but this lady makes me want to sing “I Could Have Danced All Night.” Simply sublime. Those photos after her speech reminded me of a supremely self-confident Grizzly protecting her cubs. Or how about a photo of her with a “Don’t Tread On Me” flag as a backdrop.

Actually it’s the glass harmonica, invented by Benjamin Franklin. Here’s a cool video. Once you’re through it, there will be 15 more just like it to select from.

I agree 100%. This might go down as McCain’s greatest accomplishment, “deep selecting” a great leader.

"nation-building"

That slam against Bush for nation-building has always been a false charge. I mean what did we do after WWII but rebuild (set up democracies) three countries...and as I recall the president was a Democrat. For his critics I guess deposing Hussein but leaving Al-Qaeda or Al-Sadr in charge would be preferable to a fledgling democracy. The FIRST!!! arab-Muslim democracy in history. Bush will look very good in the history books after future honest historians start writing them.

When you think of the millions of votes (between Afghanistan, the multiple Iraqi votes, the re-vote in Ukraine, etc.) that have been cast...I lost count after 129,000,000. Their democracies might not last. It’s painful for us to realize, as demonstrated by the Russian invasion of Georgia, that democracy in the 21st century can be fragile. But voting is habit-forming and, thanks to GWB, people who NEVER would have cast a vote in their lifetimes have been able to shape their own political destiny. It’s a modern miracle that has been hidden from the public but not erased from history.

I can recommend William Zeitler’s. I have 2 CD’s. I bought them directly from him when he was playing on a sidewalk in southern California.

There’s also Amazon.com

I couldn’t get in here last night.
Must have been a few more people here than usual. ;o)

The speech last night definitely brought tears to my eyes.
But, the thing that surprised me most is that my big, tough guy husband was choked up, too.

Tonight wasn’t quite the same, but that’s the best speech I’ve ever seen McCain give.
I’ve never heard him talk so much about Viet Nam, and how it effected him.
Too, I’ve never seen him speak with so much genuine humility, and energy.

It seems to me that we aren’t the only ones that Sarah energizes. ;o)

WRT my post #16, this morning it occurred to me that I neglected to mention Linda Lingle, the Governor of Hawaii, who spoke I thought on the night of Palin’s speech. She was an impressive lady, came across as very poised and intelligent, and I didn’t mean to slight her. Just for the record.
