With all the publicity about the leftwing outrage over the Obama New Yorker cover, I thought I would take you back to a time when politicians actually enjoyed being comedically roasted. Specifically the roast of Ronald Reagan by Don Rickles as you can see in this VIDEO of a Dean Martin Roast of the Gipper back around 1970. And no one enjoyed the roast more than Reagan. Take a good look at Reagan's reactions to Rickles humorous jabs. The ability to laugh at oneself is a true sign of character. Take note, Barack.

Top ten!
You are now talking of the Old Hollywood, when most actors/directors, etc had style, had heart, had decency, loved their country and above all, they had talent. It’s a thing of the past...unless you are a Democrat politician.
That was fun. Thanks for a great start to my morning, PJ!
I got a chance to see Rickles in Las Vegas 10 years ago.
It was like watching the Three Stooges; old jokes, but still funny as hell.
I loved watching the Dean Martin comedy roasts.
What fun, and some great memories! Besides Rickles and Dean Martin, at that table were Jack Benny, Phyllis Diller, Steve Allen, one of the Meadows sisters (Jane, I think) and Mark Spitz!
I miss the old days. A clip like this one reminds me how much times have changed, and not necessarily for the better (at least in politics and Hollywood).
A snapshot of a better America.
What is the ‘trying to hit jess underwood with your car’ comment about?
I’ve downloaded a bunch of these videos from YouTube. Dean Martin roasts, Sinatra, Basie & Ellington, The Johnny Carson Show. There’s a whole bunch of good entertainment there just for the asking.
One of my favorites is Buddy Hackett on the Carson show. There’s a couple, but the best is one where he tells “country” jokes.
THAT was funny, just plain funny. It was positively joyful. I loved watching Ronald Reagan enjoying it so much. I loved seeing all those old faces, especially Jack Benny, hanging onto Gov. Reagan’s arm as he laughed himself into stitches.
Thank you so much for starting my day off with laughter as well as wistful nostalgia for the days when we could laugh at ourselves. There was affection on that stage. All these years later, you can still feel it.

I to the top 20 faster than a hockey puck!
Best quote: “If you can't take their money, drink their liquor, @#$% their women, and then come in here the next day and vote against them, you don't belong here.”
Was there some incident with a car?
What a great video!
Thanks for starting my Saturday off with a laugh!
That was wonderful!
Does anybody have an audio of the Friars Club
roasting Rickles at a stag luncheon? It’s
brutal, and VERY funny.
Hilarious!
Not that I know of.
How do you download clips from YouTube? I’d like to, but I’ve never known how.
I have used Video DownloadHelper , but there are several extensions to Firefox that will help you do this.
I don't know how to do it with Internet Explorer, though.
The videos on YouTube are in FLV format. I use Firefox as my browser, and Firefox has an extension called DownloadHelper that can be installed. In Firefox, go to [Tools] [Add-ons] then select the [Get Extensions] link at lower-right. That takes you to a page where you can search for DownloadHelper.
Once installed, when you visit a page that has video files, DownloadHelper, through its icon on the taskbar (on mine it's just to the right of the address window) will list all the video files available. You click on the one you want and download it to a directory on your hard drive (My Video or whatever...).
Not all applications (like Windows Media Player) will play FLV files. But there are free FLV players available on the web. And I use an application called Total Video Converter ($$) that not only plays video, but can convert it to almost any other file format. It will even convert it to DVD format if you would want to make a DVD.
I’m guessing it can’t be done with Internet Explorer, then?
I don't know whether other such applications are available for IE. I don't use it, so have not looked into it. Perhaps someone else on the forum can help with that.
