Christie Brinkley's Divorce: Vengeance First, Kids Last
GlennSacks.com ^ | 6/25/08 | Glenn Sacks

Posted on 06/25/2008 1:56:24 PM PDT by PercivalWalks

For Christie Brinkley (pictured), apparently her anger at her husband is far more important than the welfare of her kids. Whereas most stars want their divorces private, she's fighting to keep it as public as possible.

To be fair, it sounds like Brinkley certainly had reason to be mad at soon-to-be-ex-husband Peter Cook over his infidelities and the harm he caused to their marriage. But having now married and divorced four separate times, it's doubtful that Brinkley is going to be giving lectures on "Why It's Important to Make Your Marriage Work" or "How to Be a Good Wife" any time soon.

(BTW, we do apply that both ways. When we're contacted by a man who wants to convince us what a bitch each one of his four ex-wives was, we don't put much stock in it.)

The key issue here, though, is the children. They have a nine-year-old daughter together, and Brinkley's 12-year-old son from her 3rd marriage also lives with them. Despite this, Brinkley seems determined to thrust this divorce into the spotlight as much as possible. From MSNBC's Are Christie Brinkley’s kids pawns in her divorce? (6/24/08):

Christie Brinkley is pursuing Brinkley-style brinkmanship by fighting to keep her messy divorce proceedings public, a celebrity divorce lawyer and a psychologist agreed.

“They’re playing a dangerous game of chicken with her children’s lives,” attorney Lois Lieberman told TODAY's Meredith Vieira Tuesday in New York.

The 54-year-old supermodel filed for divorce nearly two years ago, citing an affair her fourth husband, architect Peter Cook, 49, admitted having with his 18-year-old office assistant. The couple have one child together, 9-year-old Sailor. Also part of the family is Brinkley’s son, Jack, 12, from her third marriage.

An attorney appointed to represent the interests of the children joined with Cook’s attorney to keep the divorce trial, scheduled to begin July 2, private to protect the children. But Brinkley and Long Island newspaper Newsday asked to keep the trial public, and the judge agreed.

Lieberman told Vieira that it seems clear that Brinkley is trying to force Cook to settle on her terms rather than face the prospect of having his dirty laundry aired in public. In addition to the affair with his assistant, there have been allegations linking him to Internet porn and swingers’ groups.

A woman scorned?

Lieberman also feels Brinkley wants to get back at Cook for his infidelity to her.

“I truly believe that there is some vindictive measure that is part of this aspect of looking for the trial to be public,” the attorney said.

She said Brinkley’s motion to keep the trial public runs counter to normal procedure in celebrity divorces. Usually, she said, both parties try to keep proceedings private to protect their own reputations and their children.

In this case, many of the tawdry details have already been splattered all over the New York tabloids, and the children’s pictures have been published frequently. The couple live in the Hamptons, a Long Island retreat of the rich and famous and a small community in which everyone knows everyone else’s business.

I didn’t think she cared about infidelity considering her background.

Grounds for divorce, but not for harming the children.

BTW, in an discussion among my students I heard a reasonable formula for when the guy is too old for the girl (yeah, I teach kids who love math). The girl has to be at least seven years older than half the guy's age or the "ick" factor takes over, and I like the results I get from that calculation. It shouldn't be a crime, since the girl is legal, but it's nothing to be proud of either.

I thought she had only been married to Billy Joel and this guy, plus the guy she married after they survived a helicopter crash together (I think she married him). I guess I need to brush up on my tabloid reading, because I missed the fourth husband.

Life is a one take movie ... if Cook hadn't let his little brain overrule his big brain he could have avoided this mess.

A tigress is a very beautiful creature and can be seduced with the right stimuli. But as we know, a tiger is a tiger, and a bitch is a bitch no matter how hot they are. If you cavort with this kind, you need to check you package after your done and hope she hasn't taken a pound of flesh along with your soul and precious time.

Aside from the tawdryness of it all, I don’t see how this is using the kids, according to the article.

Is this a custody battle? Doesn’t seem to be. He screwed around so she has a right to flog him and he deserves what he gets, imo. Especially since he had a super model sitting right at home!! What an idiot.

Yeah, it would have been much easier on him if he’d just had a fling with her then gave her a house.

Jean-François Allaux (1973–1981)

Billy Joel (1985–1994)

Richard Taubman (1994–1995)

Peter Cook (1996-Present) (filed for divorce)

Brinkley had a romantic relationship with Olivier Chandon de Brailles, heir to the Moët-Chandon Champagne fortune. Chandon died in 1983 in an auto-racing accident. The two met in 1982 at Studio 54 in New York City at a party promoting a calendar in which Christie appeared.

It's sad that kids have to be involved in any divorce...but it's worse when the parents of the children trash each other in front of them...and publicly.

How is that anyway reasonable? A 60 year old man could “reasonably” date a 37 year old woman? I don’t think so.

Named the kid Sailor? My dear EX wanted to name my Son Aaron Jason. I asked her, this was a long time ago, do you want to have him hang around Mens rooms when he grows up.

We named him Craig William (CW) and CW2, his son, is doing just fine.

If you're the 60 year old man, I'm sure it sounds reasonable to you. If you're the 37 year old woman, then HEY, YOU'RE ALMOST 40 and should know better.

I'm not sure where the harm to the kids is. Their parents are getting divorced. What additional harm is there as bad as that?

Besides, IMO, the best interests of the child is always justice between the parents.

I've seen several divorces, and most get pretty ugly. Even in the ones where there are no false accusations of child abuse or something similar, it's common for one or both parents to pay more attention to hurting each other than to the interests of their children. Visitation should be frequent in almost all divorces, and it's not unusual for one parent to try to limit that interaction or make it as inconvenient as possible. Unless there is a real reason for dragging private details into the public domain, many things that only serve to reduce the child's respect for a parent should be kept private. That's the harm I'd like to see avoided.

i used to be a tv cameraman. i worked a shoot with ms. brinkley about 6 years ago. so that would have made her 48. i swear to the lord above to this day i have never been closer to a more stunning creature in my life.

she is without a doubt the most naturally beautiful woman i have ever seen. make-up or not.

i have zero opinion about this story. but i will say she was very nice and smiley on the day i met her. although if i was getting that much money to be hot i would smile a lot too.

You are SO right! A child has the right, and the need, to love both parents. And the one who takes that right away usually loses the child’s respect and love.

In addition to the affair with his assistant, there have been allegations linking him to Internet porn and swingers’ groups.

I don't applaud the impact this will have (has already had, really) on her children, but if he's half the cad he seems to be, she just wants to avoid him milking her dry to fund his romps with the young mistress du jour. He may love his child with her, but he has a strange way of showing how he wants to be a family with his wife and child and stepchild.

Go figure, and typical of female behavior to look for lots of attention and make it all about her and not give a damn about her kids or family.
