Who are the real environmentalists — liberals or conservatives?

By Christopher Cook

The first news item I saw this morning was from FOX News:

Feds: Caribbean Monk Seal Officially Extinct

HONOLULU — Federal officials have confirmed what biologists have long thought: The Caribbean monk seal has gone the way of the dodo.

Humans hunting the docile creatures for research, food and blubber left the population unsustainable, say biologists who warn that Hawaiian and Mediterranean monk seals could be the next to go.

The last confirmed sighting of a Caribbean monk seal was in 1952 between Jamaica and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries Service confirmed

Contrary to what a lot of liberals, lefties, and Democrats might think, my reaction to this was one of sadness. I know that a lot of them would have Americans believe that, as a conservative, my natural reaction was to say Good. Damn seals. Now that they're gone, there's just more room for me and my fleet of oil platforms.

Whatever.

Actually, I strongly suspect that most Republicans and conservatives are every bit as concerned about the environment as our friends on the left. In fact, I think many of us are more concerned, because for the left, environmentalism often seems not an end unto itself, but a vehicle for other leftist political agenda items...

Conservatives are -- everyone knows that.
Except liberals.

"Srongly suspect?" Please. The difference is that the whacko-left wants to use the environment as a means to an end - socialism.

I am not an environmentalist.
I am a conservationist.

I was raised to conserve, not waste.
The good earth was put here for us to use.
We should not waste or abuse, just use as smartly as we can.

I also know that US companies will treat the earth much better than foreign companies. The Soviet Union was the biggest polluter and now it is commie China. I’ll just bet that they pollute the gulf a hell of a lot more than we would from their oil platforms.

Earth first, we can mine the other planets later.

Irrelevant.

Environmentalism is a way to live your life, not a weapon with which to control others or beat them over the head.

I Have known true environmentalist of all parties all my life; in deed, not running off at the mouth or trying to run everyone else's life.

What are called environmentalists today (the vocal ones or the activists) are narrowly-focused doofuses whose ignorance is exceeded only by their shrillness.

Does that answer the question?

I try to be a good steward of God’s green Earth. But so do liberals, at least that’s what I can make out from their bumper stickers as they speed by me on the interstate.

Whoops. You forgot that liberals view not as "God's green Earth" but "Earth, the Green Goddess."

Just compare the G W Bush home in Crawford, TX to the homes of John Kerry, Al Gore and John Edwards.
