Who's to Blame for America's Oil Crisis?
Right Side News and WebCommentary ^ | May 26, 2008 | Bob Webster

May 26, 2008 by Bob Webster A CNBC poll asks, "Who's to Blame for America's Oil Crisis?" After more than 10,000 votes, the U.S. Congress is given the lion's share of blame at 36%, more than twice those who thought President Bush is to blame. Speculators came in a strong second at 25%. Maybe there is still hope for the American electorate. Too bad the GOP is making no discernible effort to take advantage of the historic low esteem Americans have for this wacky Democrat-controlled Congress.

The breakdown of CNBC's poll results as of Memorial Day morning:

People who watch CNBC are a pretty narrow, self-selected group. While CNBC itself might not necessarily be conservative, its viewers probably tend to be quite a bit more conservative than average, at least on economic issues like this one.

I’d be more interested to see what a scientific poll says.

The question itself is quite stupid (in fitting with CNBC's entire existence).

Does America have an "oil crisis" - or just higher than normal gasoline prices?
And even if we did have a crisis, why do we assume that someone needs to be "blamed?"

While I was once an ardent Repub, and still remain a staunch Constitutional conservative, I gave up on these losers. Since Washington became a POWER GAME instead of a governmental force to maintain America, protect its Constitution and citizens rights, conservatism has waned and failed and as political institution. The introduction of “compassionate conservatism” (radical social liberalism) was the final death blow to the traditional Republican leadership, IMHO.

The party “leadership” and RINOs will have to be cleaned out and replaced with solid conservative Americans who care about America, its founding principles, and Constitution, first. This should be a focus and priority for conservative voting America in the upcoming elections.

How is “W” resposible? He has been a backer for ANWAR,etc. exploration and development!I lay the blame directly at the feet of Congress!!The DemonRats(who are a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Enviro-Wackos),as well as RINOS like McCain and others!!!As for”the speculators”,they would be completely powerless if we were producing(for ourselves)a larger share of our 20 million barrel per-day consumption!!!!This “poll”merely demonstrates the utter stupidity of a large portion of Americans and the fact that they are still getting their”news”from the alphabets!!!!!

Except most of the GOPers in Congress have gone along with the damaging excesses of the Dems. (farm bill anyone)Since taking over Congess in 94 the greatest achievements of the GOP occurred during Clinton's term Ending wlfare, eliminating the deficit, and throwing a roadblock in the way of government growth. Then Bush 43 iselected and with the exception of the tax cut the work of Congress mirrors the design of the Dems. It can't even be called Dem lite.

Sad to say, in 20 years a good conservative will be one promising that he has no intention of touching universal health care, the way they now swear not to touch Social Security and Medicare.

There are three reasons.

1. We let the CONgress get away with allowing private banks to run and determine our money value and supply. Which has resulted in about a 50% net decrease in the value of our money since the year 2000.
2. The futures hawks have had a field day running up the price in the futures markets to the tune of about 30 bucks a barrel.
3. And yes, again CONgress has been paid off like the slimey prostitutes they are by the envirus lobby so they will not allow drilling anywhere at anytime.

The American people are on whole to GD stupid to do anything about this. The American public will fall in line like the sheep they are and allow the swindle to continue.

Lazy and stupid.

We have a crisis because we won’t increase our own domestic supplies and because we won’t increase our own domestic supplies that we have someone has to be of blame.

If I were RNC chariman, I would hit the Democrats EVERY DAY on their refusal to allow domestic drilling. This is an issue that the regular guy gets.

Would allowing more domestic drilling (ANWR, coastal areas, etc.) make a huge difference in supply anytime soon? No. But it would pop the speculative bubble, and oil prices would fall quickly.

Does America have an "oil crisis"...?

No. A crisis would be a severe shortage.

I have seen a breakdown of exactly what each portion of the price goes to, something like: crude oil - 73%; taxes - 11%; etc. Does anyone have a link that shows this including refining costs, profits, etc.? Thanks.

The crisis is in price and our ability to pay for gasoline at the pump.
In Jan. of 1999 gasoline was about $.98/gal. In Jan. 2008 gasoline was about $3.16/ gal.
Corn during the same period, $2 to $6 per bushel.
Gold, $288/oz. to $847/oz. Each has just about tripled in dollar price during Jan. 1999 to Jan. 2008.
Ave U.S. hourly wage Jan. 1999, $13.27/hr. Has this figure tripled?
And if the price of gasoline compared to crude oil was the same today as it was in Jan. ‘99 gasoline would be $13/gallon.
The crisis is near worthless dollars sloshing around both here and abroad.

Those station owners I know would love to make that much per gallon. Most I know make less than $1 for each 20 gallons sold.

There are reasons, in the work place, why some individuals are labeled politicians. Conniving, lying, boot-licking, backstabbing, greedy, power hungry, are some of them. To call a person a politician is the ultimate put-down and someone to definitely be afraid of. Congress? well, the people have spoken.

Stop the nation’s oil exports will help. Since the domestic use has increased, then we could use that exported oil right at home.

Absolutely correct. For years now, 35 for nuclear facilities and over 30 for new oil refineries, the libs, the greens , anti-capitalists have blocked oil, gas, coal oil development by American free enterprise. Schumer said, we are held hostage by OPEC. Yet 10 yrs. ago, he voted against any new drilling. It is liberalism as usual that keeps America whining for new energy sources while we have gazillions of barrels of the gooey stuff domestically and right off shore. The Gulf alone could keep us going for 100 years. It is a horrid trick by the enviros that keep us struggling. And the socialist pacifists in the voting booths keep electing liberal Dems so what will change this horror???
