It was a scary ride aboard a U.S. Airways flight over the weekend.
Some passengers said they saw parts of their plane's wing come off in midair.
The plane took off from Orlando on Saturday. Officials at U.S. Airways said a small part of the wing came off and hit the plane while in flight.

Thanks, Im in the industry. This is the first cracked passenger window I have heard of. Plenty of crack cockpit windshields, but never a pax window..

It should be fixed by then. And I wouldn’t worry. All my duct tape repairs last more than two days.

They were probably whining about the coffee being cold too. You can get it to boil pretty fast at 30,000 ft atmosphere. It gets hard to “suck” it down though, assuming your conscious.

I've seen cracks in the "outer" pane before. More than once, actually. But you know, I really hate it when
"parts of their plane's wing come off in midair."
IT'S JUST SO IRRITATING!

Well, just make sure the “front” of it is folded down behind something...
How many layers of “speed tape” do you put on a cracked window to make sure it keeps the plane pressurized. I figure four layers, crisscrossed.
Just curious. ;)
Needless to say, the pasenger in the window seat should get a discount for the damaged view.

We had just taken delivery of a new aircraft, and one of VP’s was signing off our FAA Inspector in the type. The Fed was in the right seat and was flying the leg. This thing had just been weighed, so it hadnt flown revenue yet. Inside the marker, they smacked a goose on the leading edge. It pushed the damn thing in about 7 inches. They pulled it up to hangar, and there was half the goose still stuck in the wing and blood and avian remains all over the fuse near the root. We needed a new wing. The Fed has never lived it down..

Well, I have seen speed tape coming loose and flapping hard on the windshield enough to cause a diversion and a windhield change..

Have you seen the video of the German pilot trying to land in strong winds? He got over the numbers and tried to go around but wind wouldnt let him until about halfway down the runway. I wonder 2 things: who was flying the leg, and if it was the FO, when did the captain take the airplane? Either way, I would with that crew any day..

Shouldn’t the wing have survived a collision with a bird?

You smack a bird on approach moving at 170 towards the marker, there is going to be damage. Look at this pic..

The plane landed safely in Philadelphia. U.S. Airways said the plane was taken out of service, and an investigation is under way. Hey, any landing you can walk away from is a good landing.
As far as the investigation goes, try looking for the idiot who forgot to screw down an inspection panel.

That pilot is covered in bird blood. Good thing his eyes were covered.
Can pilots do anything to avoid birds?

No, but airplanes have gone around before becuase Tower spotted a flock of birds on the approach end of the runway. In addition, the current surface observations for an airport will announce the presence of birds, as do airport diagrams and approach “plates” or diagrams of the profile to be flown to a particular runway..
