A coalition of 18 advocacy groups is opposing Arizona Senator John McCain's plans to introduce legislation to ban so-called "527" groups. McCain is preparing legislation that coalition leaders believe would stifle the political speech of groups that, ironically, were started as a result of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform bill passed by Congress in 2002.
If there is one thing worse than a Goverment Policy it is a Goverment Policy to fix a Goverment Policy.
More elitism and underhanded attempts to squelch free speach by RINO McCain. What McCain and his cronies would prefer is that all political commentary be limited only to political incumbents, and if they have to, the media.
Just an attempt to silence the average citizens who hate the corruption, betrayals, and lies coming from our elected 'leaders'.
You'll never silence me McStain! McCain can betray all his former Hanoi Hilton cell mates by buddying up to Hanoi John Kerry, but we the people will reject him, always.
I keep thinking of HRC or some other Dem is elected president they will try to restrict free speech, or persecute conservatives. How sad we have to worry about that from someone who calls himself a Republican!
McCain is about to receive his due. He'll be out of the running for the GOP nomination by the time next year rolls around.
Just remember who could have vetoed McCain-Feingold and didn't.

Right on. Yes McCain, and the other liberal Constitution busters, have been slobbering all over themselves at this prospect -- totally negating the concept of a government by and for the people...just by and for Washington, DC. It cannot get any plainer. And remember, Bush signed McCain-Feingold and it has yet to go before the SCOTUS....what does that say ??
How could any Republican or conservative in their right mind support a candidate who suppresses free political speech, and intends to do it even more.... during the election season?
McCain supporters are utterly insane.
JMHO, of course. This is the same guy who threatened to regulate baseball because of the steroid controversy and who also has legislation to regulate the internet that could have the unintended side effect of doing in FR.
As if Mccain -Feingold wasnt bad enough now he wants to make it worse. What a Putz.
I hope he way out of the running much before next year. He is, to put it charitably, unstable. Very charitable, indeed.
"Unintended"! Do you really think so?
Isn't that the same guy who swore to uphold and protect the Constitution of the United States?
Are you saying, he lied to us on January 20, 2001?
Re: veto, you are exactly right. That was one of GWB's biggest mistakes. I guess he figured it would be overturned. Or his people were afraid McCain would mount a third party run against him in '04 if he didn't get his way. In any case it was a debacle.
Yeah I do. Much as I think him capable of worse in regard to us, the language that could adversely affect us could just as easily do in a site where everyone is wild about him (hard to believe such a site exists, but I imagine it does). The only essential element is something akin to FReepmail. As I understand his revised bill, that's what is required for a site to be covered under his "new and improved" version.

Ahhh...Feingold, butterfingers!! But "glod" may be more accurate....
True. But it was a Republican majority that passed this legislation. Those who voted for it should at least be removed from office, at most be put on trial for violating their oaths.
