My weblog started as an e-mail discussion group of friends about three years ago. About a year and a half ago I converted it to a blog that has a moderate-right, conservative slant on political and social issues of the day. I still e-mail my original group, which includes both liberals and conservatives, to notify them whenever I post a new article. One thing I have noticed that has become very clear: the liberals in my group have stopped making (usually opposing) comments on my posts. I still get plenty of comments from conservatives and from liberals who just happen to come across and read my blog, but their comments are usually asinine, like, you are crazy; Bush is a criminal; you are an idiot. The comments I used to get from my liberal friends were much more reasonable, and sometimes involved lengthy discussions and well-argued positions.

For a comparison, I would recommend reading a little about the animosities and divisions that had developed between family and friends prior to the Civil War. I'm not suggesting that rational people are now ready to shed blood over liberal and conservative issues but some of the more irrational forces of each side have been ready to knock heads for some time.
I disagree. I have many friends who are progressives, and think the little guy needs extra help. I have other friends who are extra-nice and cannot face the realities of life and of history - especially in dealing with the treacheries of foreign affairs. They often present cogent and well-reasoned (but wrong) arguments to me; occasionally they are even right. My complaint is that they have all disappeared from view.
As I said, I feel myself being dragged down to their level. I have always tried to keep my blog on a courteous plane, but I find myself getting angrier and angrier. We have the pre-civil war phenomenon happening all across the country, and articles are appearing about it. As for me, I cannot even talk with one of my sons whose Bush hatred is so intense he cannot think straight.
O-X-Y-M-O-R-O-N
Liberals are only capable of such restraint when feel they are in a position of power. When they are not in power they are unable to deal with it and their inner moonbat comes out.
I attribute this to the fact that they have an unswerving belief in the so called "Tides of History" or fate if you will.
This explains why they have been steadily losing ground to the Conservatives who tend to avoid this delusion. When we lose ground we look at what we did and attempt to correct those errors.
They believe with all the fervor of an bigot that they are the chosen ones and will prevail because they are special. So when they lose they attribute it to trickery, cheating and people being stupid. This mindset makes it impossible for them to adjust to repeated failure.
I look for them to start throwing virgins into volcanoes at any moment to achieve the gods favor.
For all the babble about "Right wing fundies" the left is the true repository of some of the most fanatically superstitious people on planet earth.
It breaks my heart that I have family members and former friends who will not even speak to me. I am lucky this animosity has not come to my own home as my wife and daughter are as conservative as I, possibly a bit more so. I'm too old to physically fight but, should it come to an actual national fist-i-cuffs, I will be on the side which seeks to preserve our nation. However, I can not see how any such war could resemble the Civil War with a "north" and a "south" as American industry and philosophies are pretty much spread across each State. It is my belief that any such national war would more resemble pure anarchy than a series of battles.
LOL!
