| A year and a half ago when the Port Chicago debate erupted on SciScoop and Slashdot, the question came up, "Where's the radiation?" Trying to settle the urban legend one way or the other before the 60th anniversary of the accident (July 17), a friend and I drove there with an electronic geiger counter mounted outside my truck and my Linux Laptop inside, logging the data. What we found was startling.
There is a 2-mile wide swath of higher-than-background (13-17 uR/hr measured from the road) radiation directly across the bay from Port Chicago on Grizzly Island. It gets less noticeable further inland, even with sensitive instruments. It's a wildlife area, so maybe that's why no one noticed. But the unexplained radiation is definitely there. And the shape is facing Port Chicago from across the bay.
I posted my findings including instructions and source code so you can duplicate my experiment. Time to get the media to exercise their FOIA expertise and pester members of Congress for info.
Sounds pretty bizarre to me, but wouldn't it be interesting if saint FDR had tested a nuke on US citzens, and left black sailor to die in the test?
Background about Port Chicago in the Foxhole here:
From the photos, there doesn't appear to be enough damage.
Thanks for the plug PAR35.
I had heard the "nuclear" theory before but never gave it any credence.
I've known the story of Port Chicago for years. I was really pleased a couple of years ago when JAG did an episode about clearing the name of one of the "mutineers" as a way to tell the story. And I think they did a pretty good job.
This report is the first time I've heard the alternate "theory" and I normally don't buy into tin foil hat stuff, however, this is pretty consistent information and the bona fides of the main proponent of this theory (a student of Edward Teller - Dr. Strangelove himself) are pretty impressive.
I don't buy it, anymore than I buy the "philadelphia experiment" crap, but I can't dismiss it the way I can other such stories. Particularly not with current evidence of higher than background radiation in an area consistent with the fall out from a low yield test device and the high incidence of cancers in the same area. I lived in the Bay Area for about 5 years and remember lots of speculation about the high cancer rates in that area.
These guys sound like the GhostBusters.
Or Garth from Wayne's World.
Absolutely. But, however unlikely, it is still not outside of the realm of possibility. Having never heard the story told with this twist before, and having known about it for almost 30 years, it struck me as interesting.
The damage at Port Chicago looks to be less or on par with Texas City or Halifax. If you want elevated cancer levels, check out the area around the Texas City blast. Of course, they have all sorts of nasty stuff in the air and water around the petrochemical plants there.
