But how coincidental. I was just talking about Old man and the sea yesterday, read it. Not much liked it. Not a big Hemmingway fan but right now am reading A moveable feast which is very interesting.
Boy, Fitzgerald comes off as a real hypochondriac. I do recommend reading this book. Paris in the twenties, fascinating.

Good one and needs to be back at the top. The simple answer to your question is the Hippies who went back to school and became socialists/marxists with their "if it feels good, do it" philosophy and then took over our colleges, plus the parents lackadaisical behavior.
I lived through the so-called "counter culture" of 60's and saw it coming. Out of curiosity, I actually visited a "commune" for a couple days. I saw those singing kumbaya with bongos or such while others tended to their assigned duties. The anger from the producers was palpable. The commune disbanded some weeks later.
Read Robert H. Bork's book, "Slouching Towards Gomorrah". Although published in 1996, he explains the devolution of our culture. He claims and I agree, it started with the Greatest Generation that produced the Hippies from the relief of WWII and economic opportunities to pursue and let their kids go wild. I was a product of such lack of parenting until I joined the Navy.
