Finally, and as yet, less than 10%. Rab fears the others have already been scrapped out beyond recall.

Raben.

No problem. We can use the new and improved F-22185235 fits-alls on them.

Germany made a critical tank production mistake in WW II: Instead of making large numbers of one proven model (the Panther), they wasted resources by fooling around with many different models (the Tiger, the Elephant, etc).

Is America following that same path? For example, would we be better off with 20 B-1's or 200 B-52's?

We don’t have the tooling to build either B-1s or B-52s.

...or for that matter, A-10s.

The new untested replacement for the warthog will be in 2023, I believe.

Meanwhile, nothing is better for close combat air support than the A-10. You can’t bring it down, unless you blow it up in mid air. The speed is just right for getting at the enemy on the ground. Remember, we are not engaged in high speed dogfights. Getting them mothballed in Germany does no good for the troops on the ground, who can attest how they have saved their bacon. It’s big, it’s ugly and it’s deadly.

I would look if bribes are being made.

200 B-52’s ?

Unfortunately, we signed a treaty with Moscow, decades ago, the 76 B-52s in service now, are the limit. There are 12 more sitting in the AZ bone yard, but the only way they can be put back in service, is if one of the existing ones is taken out. A fire on one at Barksdale caused it to be replaced, just this year, by a bone yard B-52, as it was cheaper to restore it, than to repair the damaged one.

Ya know, I’m sick of hearing about tooling.

The tooling didn’t exist before they were originally built. Tooling can be rebuilt. And with today’s production tools for making tools; it will be, or can be quicker. The blueprints still exist after all, not to mention a whole boatload of folks who’ve been flying, maintaining, and upgrading them ever since they came off the line.

The problem isn’t tooling, or capability - it’s the will!

I remember the A-10 back in the early 80’s Spangdahlem housed the Ammo for them. What a great tank killer and of course anything it hit was DOA!!!!

With a unit hosting 100 A-10s theoretically I could support 100 missions.

If my unit has instead 15 F-35s how many missions can I support?

I would look if bribes are being made.

If there aren't bribes, then we're talking lethal levels of incompetence.

Three to Five, due to maintenance/resupply logistics...

I hear ya. But I think the point about “retooling” is that if you have to go to the trouble of making A-10’s anew, you might as well put together something even better for the all the resources being spent.

We can’t build Saturn rockets for the same reason. So instead of retooling to make Saturn moon rockets, we’re better off making a better moon rocket.

Theoretically, could the Hog take out an M1 Abrams tank?

Sounds like 128 of those beauties could be used productively to deal with those daily parades of hundreds of ISIS trucks in Syria celebrating “victories” daily.
