Juan Williams: Thanks to the stimulus, our economy is better off than it was 4 years ago
Fox News ^ | February 28, 2012 | Juan Williams

President Obama’s poll numbers are getting better every day. But one clear weakness remains in the public mind — his performance in handling the U.S. economy.

The most unpopular element of his economic stewardship is the stimulus, officially titled "The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act." It turned 3 years-old last week.

A new Pew poll finds 41 percent of Americans disapprove of the 2009 stimulus while 37 percent approve. In 2010, a CNN poll found three quarters of the public felt most of the stimulus was wasted and did not help the economy. Later in 2010 a Rasmussen poll found 56 percent opposed to any suggestion of a second stimulus.

The upcoming presidential election is likely to be a debate about the value of the stimulus. Before the rhetoric gets too hot, a simple question begs to be answered: Is there any evidence that the stimulus helped the economy?

As Sarah Palin might say, “You betcha!”

But in looking back on the news coverage and the angry rhetoric used by the GOP during the congressional debate of the stimulus, it is striking how little discussion there was of what the stimulus actually entailed.

First, the bulk of it was composed of tax cuts. In fact, the stimulus was one of the largest single tax cuts in U.S. history. To say the stimulus failed is to make the argument that tax cuts do not stimulate the economy....

I am sick and tired of allowing the liberal press to format all of OUR arguments for us!

We laid down and allowed them to paint Bush as a ridiculous fool! In doing so, we lost any opportunity to point out how things were better under a Republican administration than they are now.

Under Bush, the stock market surged to record levels. People had strong IRA's and anticipated a healthy retirement. Houses and cars kept getting bigger and better. Heck, Starbucks' $4 coffee became an everyday requirement and "boutique" items became common goods! We lived in a very well-off economy!

I don't care how you frame it, THINGS WERE BETTER 5 YEARS AGO UNDER BUSH than they are now! Ask a family if they had more "disposable income" then - YES! Ask a college graduate (or any job-hunter, for that matter) if they would rather be searching for a job in 2004-5 or now. We know the answer! Top to bottom, the Bush years brought us the highest standard of living ever seen anywhere, anytime!

Republicans should be pointing out the huge discrepancies between the standard of living now and during Bush's tenure. But, they can't do that. The "idiot Bush" response would kill them!

P.S. Don't yell at me that the "rich" were the only benefactors of the good times. Our "poor" were very well taken care of.

Of course he thinks that. The liberal media told him so!

Republicans should be screaming from the rooftops that the average American was substantially better off during Bush's tenure than they are now. But, they can't do that. They would be bombarded with "idiot Bush" responses and the sheeple would eat it up!

Things were a lot better under President Bush, more time with the family and more buying power. I hope that more American realize that President Obama’s socialism doesn't work for working people.

These people are nuts. I am convinced they are being intimidated into saying this stuff and not covering the gas prices or when they do putting a positive spin on it.
