Some Saints Fans Say the Weather in Chicago Wasn't Nearly as Cold as the Fans
wafb.com ^ | 01/22/07 | wafb

The Saints may have lost the NFC championship, but you certainly couldn't tell from the mob of fans that came out in New Orleans at 1:00 in the morning to welcome them home.

And, fans that arrived home from Chicago were just as supportive of their team even though many of them took in some extremely crude comments from Chicago fans.

In fact, Saints fans say it was cold in the ‘Windy City,' but not nearly as cold as some of the people there.

Those Saints fans tell 9News that some Bears fans made reference to Hurricane Katrina in their taunts.

WAFB's Avery Davidson was at the Baton Rouge Metro Airport, where Saints fans were glad to return to southern hospitality.

Just to be clear, the fans Avery spoke with say the majority of people in Chicago were very nice, but you know what they say about a few bad apples and it appears some were very bad.

It's easy for Saints fans to push away Bears fans that interrupt their interview, but pictures like this one hit much deeper.

Even when folks from Chicago try to apologize...

One Bears fan says, "Some of these Bears fans, you know, just don't have no class. *beep*"

This guy was interrupted by one of his own. Back to the picture, you may have seen it on The Dead Pelican.com. The sign reads, "Bears Finish What Katrina Started."

You have to wonder if that fan knew what Katrina started and that the flood waters brought more than 1,000 Louisiana lives to an end.

Tricia Jett says, "It's very, very disappointing that there are people that would take something that happened so bad for our city and try to turn it around over a football game."

Tricia Jett is one of several people just arriving at the Baton Rouge Metro Airport from Chicago. Every Saints fan who spoke with 9News said they had at least one run in with a rude Bears fan.

Avery asks, "What were they saying that was so rude?" The guy responded, "I can't say it on camera."

That did not stop some of them from spouting expletives right after the game.

One woman says, "They have not been very nice... *beep*."

One Saints fan says she has a memory she can't bleep out. This is what she says a Bears fan had to say at her hotel.

Susan Joly says a Bears fan said, "'Oh yeah, you thought Katrina was bad' and just really not giving them any chance to say, you know, the man lost his wife and child in Katrina and they were ragging him over that and it was just terrible."

Another Saints fan said after going to several cubs games, he expects to run into people around Chicago who cross the line.

I watched the game and I have to say I was shocked when a camera was panning the Bears fans and this one dope gave the camera the finger. AND, his team was winning! Not once did he do it, but when the camera came back and panned in reverse he threw the bird out for a second time. What would he have done if Da Bears were losing?

Nothing wrong with using Katrina, as long as it's only used as a backdrop for a Cinderella story ?

so the guys sign aint as bad as it looks.

How many of the NO Saints helped with the Katrina after effect?

Not many I am willing to bet.

The Katrina card is soooooo overplayed.

Mayor Ray Nagin blamed President Bush for the New Orleans loss to the Bears. He said that FEMA did not deploy in a timely manner to address the severe weather event. :) :) (It's not true, but it has a certain ring to it)

The Saints could've won the game had they not abandoned the run.

Brees is sitting there passing on first downs early in the 3rd quarter. Hello. All they had to do was stick to the run and wear the defense down a little. Whatever happened to the reverses Bush and McAllister did? What about that fullback who ran like Mike Allstot for a minute?

Any team in the SEC has rude fans. It's just the way it goes. Chicago fans who mock Katrina and its destruction should be lucky they never have to go through what people down here had to go through. I have a buddy at work who hasn't been emotionally stable since and it cost him his wife of over 20 years. I have to say that there were a lot of people down here the couple days after Katrina who were depressed beyond belief. My fiance's uncle lost his wife a few weeks after the storm when he slid off the road and hit a debris pile.

Sure, I understand why Chicago fans want to mock it. It makes for an easy visceral taunt. But in my eyes it just makes them damned fools who should be lucky that they haven't had anything like this happen to their city.

There are classless people everywhere. As a Chicago area Bears fan, I personally did not hear any negative Katrina references. I heard only good football rivalry stuff.

That said, having been in New Orleans several times for business, I would think people who have a place like Bourbon Street as a town anchor, should not be too upset with a few uncouth people at a football game.

"The Saints could've won the game had they not abandoned the run."

Perhaps they would have had a better chance if Reggie Bush had not pointed a finget at Urlacher and flipped into the endzone. You don't rattle a Bears' cage and expect the Bear to not get mad. The Bears defense shut down the Saints solid from that point on.

Never had anything like it? You need to read some history, bub.

In 1871 there were a drought in Illinois. Only an inch of rain fell all summer and fall. Chicago averaged about two fires a day the previous year, including twenty in the preceding week. On October 8 a fire broke out in a crowded Chicago neighborhood somewhere in or very near the O'Leary barn. No one knows the exact location where the fire began.

Hot winds spread the flames. The fire, driven by a strong wind out of the southwest, headed straight for the center of the city. The streets, sidewalks, and bridges which were made of wood burned easily. By 1:30 the fire reached the Courthouse tower. When city officials realized that the building was itself doomed, they released the prisoners from the basement just in time. Thousands of people ran from the city to the shores of Lake Michigan.

The Great Fire burned out of control for 24 hours. The flames were so hot that the wheels on streetcars melted. Train tracks turned into twisted steel snakes. On Tuesday morning the rain began to fall. The flames finally began to die out.

After the fire died down there were stories of brave rescues and narrow escapes. There were also stories of looting. The fire left Chicago in ashes. At least 17,000 buildings were destroyed and 100,000 people were left homeless. Three hundred Chicagoans were dead. The fire burned more than 2000 acres, and the property loss was $200 million.

Chicago quickly rebuilt and by 1875 little evidence of the disaster remained.

I might hasten to add Chicago was rebuilt in less than four years without a dime of Federal aid or a single FEMA debit card.

The Saints loss was a direct result of Bush not authorizing FEMA to hand out $2,000 cash cards and tickets to the game.

That's because Bush hates black people! (sarcasm)

I am, for this reason. Before the New Orleans/Dallas game, I was talking about the game with someone and he said that the Saints DESERVE to win BECAUSE of Katrina. That's when I stopped listening to those who draw the woe-is-us Katrina card. That's been over a year and a half ago. Win or lose on merit. I don't mean to offend anyone with what I posted, but that rationale about DESERVING to win because of Katrina did it for me.

I hope the Colts beat the Bears as bad as humanly possible just the way the Gators beat OSU. The AFC is so much stronger than the NFC. The Bears would be 5th or 6th seed in the AFC at best. The Super Bowl was this Sunday in the AFC CS game. Manning and the Indy offense are gonna light them up. Too much talent, speed and an elephantine offensive line that can crush. I want the liberal fans of the Bears to start to experience as much disappointment and defeat as possible. May it be a harbinger of things to come.

The hell of it is, I heard on a sports show some days back that Maxim magazine was doing a search for that chick so they could do a photo spread of her.

What a country - wear an obscene T-shirt to a football game and become a celebrity overnight. Now she can join Paris, Britney and Lindsay and strut around town without panties - the Four Skanks of the Apocalypse.

DA Colts need to worry about their Special Teams that don't look to "special..." the Colts kick returner sucks and he likes to fumble, DA Bears like to strip the ball and force turnovers, Indy would be wise to use a different return man for kickoffs AND punts in the Super Bowl.. Also, they should lineup "normal" on kickoffs because Devin Hester will torch them if they give him any kind of crease/seam.

You're the most intellectually dishonest person I've ever met, liberal or conservative.

No one in Chicago alive today lived through the Chicago fires. But if jerks like you really like to turn the knife when 1000+ of our people are horribly killed then you deserve to burn in hell. This was the worst thing to happen to so many people around here and it's the punchline of a football joke. Go to hell jerk.

Granted many NO fans can be just as bad as those they say are bad, that's just messed up. Someone said something about "playing the Katrina card." It's got nothing to do with that when you have someone who lost their family, home, all they know, in that storm, and people are ragging him about Katrina. Still amazes me at times how inhuman people can be. From the look of the punks holding the sign, they don't much have a clue about anything going on around them anyway...so we probably shouldn't put much stock in anything they do to begin with. All this over what, a football game, amazing. Bet your momma's proud of ya!

Ok, my apologies for taking the "Katrina card" thing out of context. And to those who believe the Saints should win or whatever just because of that I'll disagree. It WOULD have been great to see them win, giving a much needed morale boost to not only the city but the state considering the Saints past history, but, they have to earn it like the rest of them. My hats off to them for doing as good as they did though. I was dissapointed too, but, so goes pro sports. The real issue is, however, that using those types of things to "take a stab at" opposing fans, from EITHER side of the coin, is just plain messed up, totally without class, and borderline inhuman. Its a blasted football game, and PRO football to boot.

You poor thing.

I guess I better not bring up the frequent cholera epidemics in Chicago, including one that killed over 9,000 people after the 1893 worlds fair. Fully 5% of the population of the City died that summer.

Once again we managed to muddle through without a single FEMA debit card....
