The following is the complete text of Mel Gibson's statement regarding his arrest for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol:
"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the L.A. County sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person.
"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said.
"Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry.
"I have battled the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."
He's ashamed that his true views came out for everyone to hear.
Sounds like a Democrat
While I like Mel Gibson as an actor, his drunken, aggressive conduct and hateful words as a 50 year old father of six and a role model for many are reprehensible. I'm reminded of the old Roman maxim, "Vin Veneto Veritas" -- "with wine comes truth" (not literal truth, but what the inebriate really thinks when his tongue is loosened).
What did he say?
Let's spank him.
I see no apologies to the Jewish community.
Not very Christian. Boy, did I have him pegged.
Wow.....sounds like there is no compassion for people who have made mistakes in their lives.
It is an honor to be in the presence of those who never made an mistake. Thank you for being perfect.
So did Matt and Trey.
At least it is a sincere apology. It's still hard to accept -- not so much the drunk driving part as the other. I don't know what to think.
flamer........I am sorry you were a democrat.
You noticed that, too.
More evidence that the only thing he didn't "believe" about what he said was that the female deputy didn't have "sugar "t**s."
So we are not entitled to have an opinion when somebody fouls up?
Look, maybe Mel was honest, but I can't help but to be skeptical. Mel is going to have to do a lot more than just talk.
A spanking is a good idea.
The same holds true of folks who use the protective distance and anonymity of their computers to speak their "minds" about others. Personally, I don't know what Mel Gibson said when he was drunk, nor do I care. I know what he stands for in his life, and the faith and works of his life speak for themselves. When you find somebody who doesn't have a flaw or who doesn't sin, you've either found God or the person whom you think you are.
If Mel said derogatory comments about the Jews what would you suggest he do to make amends? Seriously.
...forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us
Has Kennedy apologized for his alcoholism?
Gibson is human, just as we all are.
A alcoholic who takes a drink is not making a "mistake."
He is playing with fire intentionally, and he knows it when he takes that drink.
He deserves every bit of the contempt that will be heaped upon him over this. The man has six children, he endangered other people, said some horrible things about Jews, and is lucky he didn't have his head taken off for what he said to, and about, the deputies.
Some will drink themselves to a stupor because of that, while others will shoot up a Jewish center.
The guy was only a .12 % BA?
What a light weight, the homicide dicks I worked with started their day higher than that ;^)
An apology for starters.
I think some of us have you pegged, too.
I'm willing to give him a pass, if he's willing to plug the jug.
"with wine comes truth" (not literal truth, but what the inebriate really thinks when his tongue is loosened).
you definitely have nailed that right on the head.....unfortunately I know that from experience.
I agree but would you believe it? Would it be enough?
Glad he released this statement. Guess he's human after all.
He apparently despises Jews.
Perhaps you admire people like that.
I don't.
Let's go out. :^)
Gibson showed his true colors last night during his arrest. I argued with you about THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST and his portrayal of Jews. I stood up for Gibson to you and a number of my Jewish friends. Now, I'm sorry I did.
He is accepting responsibility?
Un un-Kennedy-esque.
Who knows? But he first has to apologize.
I seem to recall another quote about Jews starting wars:
"If international finance Jewry inside and outside of Europe should succeed once more in plunging nations into another world war, the consequence will not be the Bolshevation of the earth and thereby the victory of Jewry, but the annihilation of the Jewish race in Europe." - Adolf Hitler, 1939.
Love Mel for what he is. We don't need to love his problem with alcohol. Put another way. Hate the sin, Love the sinner.
The "mistake" was driving drunk. In this he is no different than Patches Kennedy.
The Jewhatred is something else altogether. In this he is no different than your basic garden variety Neo-Nazi.
Didn't some Freepers
give you hell? Has anyone
said, "You're right, we're wrong?"
So, he apologized? Big deal...he's a Jew-Hater and I will NEVER give him another dime of my money.
?????
Move to New York and run for the U.S. senate?
And what exactly is he? He's a movie-maker who hates Jews.
Judge not, lest ye be judged.
That isn't "crazy drunk". That's just crazy.
Mel has built up a lot of infrastructure around his religious views. If he seriously wants to solve what's going on in his mind, there is going to be a lot of fallout to those around him.
I'm going to give him a break here for one reason: there are things that I have done and said that I am deeply ashamed about, and reflecting and meditating on that flawed behavior has changed me as a man. Maybe he is a screaming Jew hater. He can change. One thing that Christianity has taught me is that all have sinned and all can be forgiven. Another lesson I've learned is that people are transcendent beings. We are not stuck on autopilot like God's lesser creatures. In fact, some of things that I am deeply ashamed about are contained somewhere in documents that are now sealed, so I know what it is like to have your shameful behavior posted in public for all to see. I know how small and stupid I felt; for a star like Mel Gibson, that public display must be extraordinarily humilating. I hope Mel uses this incident to become a better man.
