COLUMBUS, OHIO - A man opened fire in an Ohio nightclub Wednesday night, killing a heavy metal guitarist and three others before a police officer shot him to death.
The unidentified man climbed onto the stage at the Alrosa Villa just as the band Damageplan was opening its show, firing several shots at guitarist Dimebag Darrel Abbott.
Abbott was killed, witnesses said.
The gunman also killed a club bouncer and two other people before a police officer arriving at the scene shot and killed him.
Two other people were wounded as the man fired into the crowd before police arrived.
Abbott's brother Vinnie Paul Abbott is the drummer for Damageplan and was also on stage Wednesday night.
Both men were original members of pioneer thrash band Pantera when it recorded four albums between 1990 and 1996, including Far Beyond Driven, which debuted at No. 1 in 1994.
Yep. Hey, that was posted 6 hours ago. 6 hours ago, I was in bed.
Just linking so people could see the orginal thread. Since it most likely will get buried.
You've got to be kidding. That really sucks.
"Deadbag Darrel"
I had heard of the rock group Damageplan, didn't realize they had quite a number of hits. One "Ashes To Ashes" featured former Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell, and now solo guitarist working with The Cult frontman on a side project The Cardboard Vampyres.

A lot better than the usual "already posted" that the freeper police use. Actually helpful.

Dimebag Darrel was a pretty good guitarist and a very interesting fellow.
I can't believe this. 5 people dead. Horrible.
I can't believe some crazed nut would do this.
I didn't know the brothers were still playing. I hadn't heard anything about them after Pantera.
Me neither, but it doesn't surprise me that alot of the biggest metal acts have been playing smoky clubs. I saw the other day that Motley Crue is even making a comeback next year. Matter of fact it was on the local news and the announcement was made on Larry The Lizard King's show.
This is a different article, so your comment is off-base.
;-)

Oh my God. Wait until I tell my son and son in law:-(
We saw Pantera perform at Ozzfest several years ago. They were great. I was sorry that they broke up. Dimebag had a great personality from what I got from interviews, and knew his way around a guitar. Bummer...
Darrell Abbott is the son of country-western songwriter Jerry Abbott. Born in Dallas, Texas, Dime grew up with a lot of country influences in his life. He was always exposed to music and musical instruments, and he began playing the guitar at a very young age. He took lessons from country legends, and picked it up easily. He was considered a virtuoso at an early age, and by the time he was sixteen years old, he had already won all of the local talent competitions and band contests, and was no longer allowed to enter. Dime spent many years playing clubs and bars around Dallas before getting any national recognition........
Somewhere in the clouds he and ODB are jamming . . . ;^)
Nah, I'd say he's probably jamming with Randy Rhoads, one of Dimebag's influences.
Just saw on FOX News: Cops identify the gunman as 25-year old Nathan Gale.
A Phyllis Diller look alike?
Thanks for the info. I know what is going to be playing on the stereo today.
Your idiocy is uncalled for!
Oh, put a sock in it, you humorless dolt.
Read your mail...you POS!
No. So apparently you have differnt levels of so-called idiocy, hmm?
Listen to you...how f'n pathetic can someone like you be!?!
I bet if I put 1/2 a mind to it....I could be just like you.
The CBC affiliate in Saskatchewan played a 3 minute snippet of the 7:02 long Pantera song Cemetary Gates this morning on their local morning program. That had to be a shock to it's devoted seasoned citizens audience. LOL
Normally you don't hear that kind of music on CBC, except late at night on the FM side.

Ya know what, that's just wrong...
If Miss Little Hipster wants to glorify drugs, have at it.
LMRNAO!
Well, if I had to bank a wager, I'd say that this senseless tragedy was caused by a small-caliber firearm leaping onto the guys shoulder and whispering in his ear until he was convinced that he had to kill the guy. No human being would ever consider the taking of another human life unless that weapon coerced him into it.
Must have a progressive DJ on that station. Cool track, my son in law blasted it, after I convinced them that it wasn't a joke. I didn't know until later today that the gunman took a hostage.
