As an old SF nut, I prefer believe this kind of thing happens often. I understand the estimates for life-friendly planets keep getting revised down, but hope for an escape clause.
Yeah, but Real Life has a tendency to be such a major disappointment in this regard. First, they told us there were no dinosaurs or swamps on Venus for the Rocketeers with Fuzzy Ears to encounter in their epic trek. Then they told us there were canals on Mars for Ray Bradbury or Robert Heinlein to cruise upon. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop in regards to alien life forms in the universe.
