Shakira’s Sons Hated ‘Barbie’ Because It’s ‘Emasculating,’ and She Agrees: ‘I Like Pop Culture’ That Empowers Women ‘Without Robbing Men of Their Possibility to Be Men’

The music icon said she somewhat agreed with her two sons who strongly disliked “Barbie,” suggesting that it was a piece of pop culture that robbed “men of their possibility to be men.”

Shakira graces the cover of Allure magazine and holds nothing back when asked about her thoughts on “Barbie,” the Greta Gerwig-directed blockbuster that topped the 2023 box office with $1.4 billion worldwide and earned eight Oscar nominations, including best picture. The music icon said she somewhat agreed with her two sons who strongly disliked “Barbie,” suggesting that it was a piece of pop culture that robbed “men of their possibility to be men.”

“My sons absolutely hated it,” Shakira said. “They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent. I’m raising two boys. I want ’em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women. I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide. I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity.”

“I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well,” the singer added. “We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost.”

“Just because a woman can do it all doesn’t mean she should?” the interviewer asked.

“Why not share the load with people who deserve to carry it, who have a duty to carry it as well?” Shakira answered.

Shakira’s interview is not the first time a public figure has perceived “Barbie” as emasculating. The fantasy comedy ruffled the feathers of some conservative figures during its theatrical release, with podcaster Matt Walsh condemning it as “the most aggressively anti-man, feminist propaganda fest ever put to film.” Bill Maher later slammed the film as “man-hating.”

Gerwig, who also co-wrote the “Barbie” script with Noah Baumbach, weighed in on the backlash in an interview with The New York Times in which she said she never expected such a response.

“Certainly, there’s a lot of passion,” the filmmaker added. “My hope for the movie is that it’s an invitation for everybody to be part of the party and let go of the things that aren’t necessarily serving us as either women or men. I hope that in all of that passion, if they see it or engage with it, it can give them some of the relief that it gave other people.”

The backlash prompted other celebrities to speak out in support of “Barbie,” including Marc Maron.

“The fact that certain men took offense to the point where they, you know, tried to build a grift around it in terms of their narrative is right wing [explicative],” Maron said on his podcast. “It’s so embarrassing for them. I mean, so embarrassing for them. Any dude that can’t take those hits in that movie, they’ve really got to look in their pants and decide what they’re made of. I mean, Jesus Christ, what a bunch of fucking insecure babies.”

Shakira is making the press rounds in support of her new album, “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran.” Read her full Allure magazine cover story here.

Why did these *guys* go to see a movie about Barbie? Looks like they emasculated themselves, the stupid idiots.

Why are not, 10 U.S. Army divisions (20,000 personnel, ea.) consisting entirely of women who are American citizens who volunteered, on station along the northern frontier of Alaska - prepared to defend North America from the Russians?

Why are not, 10 U.S. Army divisions (20,000 personnel, ea.) consisting entirely of women who are American citizens who volunteered, on station along the southern border - OUTSIDE THE WIRE - facing and dealing with The Invasion?

In the media, empowered.

In the media, have all the answers.

Heads wagging like fingers.

Fingers wagging like tongues.

Tongues wagging like tails.

Where are women?

The father figure is important in the home but the mother is the one who inspires the sons’ masculinity in accordance with the treatment that she gives to the father.

Apparently, because no real boy would want to go see Barbie for goodness sake. She must have taken them because she wanted to see it, or you are over the target.

I had never even heard of Shakira until yesterday when OANN sent me this story. So I looked up her music video, “The Hips Don’t Lie. Seems to contradict her statement:

I’m raising two boys. I want ’em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women.

####

Very trashy, video, in my opinion. And why would she take her sons to see that stupid movie in the first place?

And I am most disappointed that OANN chose this story to send to my inbox.

I didn’t see the video, but that was years before she had children, so her views may be evolving. Maybe she will think more abut what she exposes her children to after this movie. The Spanish government is also suing her for paying too little in taxes. We can only hope that more people learn from such experiences.

By the way, Shakira is a super-intelligent and talented South American woman; and although I am sure that I do not agree with her on everything, she is one of the last people that I would go out of my way to criticize. Bless that wonderful woman, we have many more issues to worry about.

“They felt that it was emasculating ...”

If you see or observe the behavior of a woman, and you aren’t attracted to that woman, it’s unlikely that the guy is emasculated or whatever you want to call it.

It’s likely that the woman has become unattractive to him, especially when he has many other women he can consider.

Here’s something from a Nelson DeMille novel:

A really big lady was dancing on a table and I said to her, “Great legs,” and she smiled and said, “Do you really think so?” And I said, “Definitely. Most tables would have collapsed by now.”

Read up on Shakira, not everyone in the media is as bad as you think. Shakira, despite not being perfect, is more one of us that you realize.

I am honestly SICK of someone (nickcarraway) posting CRAP that “him or her or it” did not even bother to read or view.

I am 1998 also, and not a dummy, and I am SICK of this crap.

By the way, it is EVENING for Americans, not morning.
