The term "straphanger" has been around for a while.

Usually they are young males, giving up their subway seats to women and the elderly so they can sit down in crowded cars.

Whenever I take the NYC subway I always make it a point to stand well away from the track until the train pulls up so that some schizophrenic doesn’t push me onto the tracks.

I grew up there, but that’s my new rule. Told my kid and am telling everyone. It’s open season on straphangers these days!
