My mom tells the story of living in NYC in a double-bungalow while dad was training in the Navy. They had some sort of bugs in the furnished rental.
One clear cold day they dragged everything out into the front yard in an attempt to kill them. Mattress, chairs, rugs, etc.
The lady landlord came by. My mom, not wanting to offend her, said it was an old Norwegian custom (my parents lived lived in Minnesota) to do this to celebrate winter and new beginnings and making things fresh.
Now of course I don’t recall if it got rid of the bugs or not. I think it did.
