There may conceptually be automobiles that are worth more than a human life — but none of them are a Kia.

Is it? I know what you mean here, but generally when something is “poorly worded” it is not an intentional act to my way of thinking.

Modern journalism, the standard style guide euphemistic weasel word salad requiring reverse engineering and multiple readings to try and figure out what actually happened, is ultimately a conscious decision. It actually takes less effort to write something clear and concise compared to typical news stories, so whatever is going on it is decidedly something other than simply “poor”writing, though I’m not exactly sure what to call it.

Shooting with a handgun from a height and distance.

Sounds like he did fine.

At night.

None of this applies here, it became moot when the gentleman took a hostage at gunpoint. It’s legal in every state to ventilate under that kind of situation. Well - maybe not Massachusetts or Illinois, but you know, states where normal people still live.

I used to shoot a little bit with a state trooper - I worked with his wife

One day I shot the hostage on the target instead of the bad guy

Took my earmuffs off and I said “oops I shot the hostage!”

He said “that’s OK. Now he’s got nothing to negotiate with!”

He shot my Ruger .45 - one magazine - next magazine he grouped them all at 75 feet - about 1-1/4 inches.

He said wow! I said yeah that’s what it’s supposed to do.

I couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn with it - I tried 185 grain - 195 - 230

9mm I can put 3 in the head at 21 feet without practice

With that ,45 not so much

It wasn’t the gun - sadly it’s gone now but I have two new Springfield.45 pistols

Is “accused” the new “alleged”?

Did you catch the part of the story about a human hostage? The “Kia” got nothin’ to do with it.

This whole “property isn’t worth a human life” needs revisiting, frankly. This was a contractual or social compact kind of arrangement.

Society agreed to stand down, avoid being deputized (an order that cannot be refused, by the way) and implement paid and duly sworn full time law enforcement. We pay out the nose for this.

Now we’re witnessing the collapse of their end of the agreement. I’m not arguing with you or your side of the argument so much as pointing out this point is always going to be the default if crime is not kept under control.

At least stop making us pay all these taxes, if I have to live in a third world shithole it should at least be affordable.

“I would never take potshots with a handgun at a guy holding my g.f. at gunpoint! my wife at gun point? different scenarios..”

Especially dangerous situation when they’re together.

At the point he shot, the situation was his girlfriend was being held hostage at gunpoint under a demand he return with the keys.

That turns into justification for use of deadly force in all 50 states.

Wow that could go either way depending on the Prosecutor and the Jury. Use of deadly force laws are pretty clear that deadly force is only allowed if a “reasonable man” feels that immediate threat is present to themself or someone else.

“....The accused thief ordered the man to bring him his car keys, which he had left in his apartment, police told KSAT.

The man told police that his girlfriend was being held at gunpoint, the outlet reported. Instead of getting his keys as the accused thief demanded, he grabbed a handgun, walked out onto his balcony and opened fire, police told the station....”

First, that sounds like pretty accurate shooting on the part of the Kia owner. However, I personally would not have endangered a girlfriend like that. Perhaps going down to the the thief with the car keys and insisting that his girlfriend go free, then de-escalating the situation by saying that the police are on their way and tossing him the keys. Alternately, once the girlfriend is safe, then shooting an armed thief who has already made a deadly force threat should not be too bad to defend as long as the Kia owner can honestly say he was afraid for his life.

I am sure he will be questioned, as will his girlfriend, on if they feared for her or his life. I am also sure that he needs to get a really good attorney to school him on some of the ins and outs of local use of deadly force laws and self defense laws.

(P.S.) If you ever need to get the police in a hurry, tell the 911 operator that you are a license concealed carry holder and you are afraid for your life or the life of another and need their help immediately.

“There may conceptually be automobiles that are worth more than a human life — but none of them are a Kia.”

If it’s MY Kia and someone is trying to steal it, it is indeed worth more than that person’s life.

Must have had night sites on the gun, worth the $75.00 extra. If you shoot a bad guy it will be twilight or after dark most likely, in low light conditions, so be prepared.
