How do we know they are an extinct goose? Maybe they are just a different coloration of a common goose.
Think of today’s different chickens. Leghorns, Rhode Island Reds, Buffs. Still chickens and can interbreed without becoming sterile which shows they are the same species of chicken.

You say GEESE. Not so fast there.
If there is one fish that is singular, if there are more than one fish, all of the same species, they are still fish, plural. BUT, if there is more than one fish and they are of different species they are fishes.
Is there some weird rule for a gaggle of geese of different kinds?
