Ted Cruz: Future of conservatism is populist and libertarian
Washington Examiner ^ | July 14 | by Anthony Leonardi,

Sen. Ted Cruz said the future of conservatism after President Trump leaves office can be both populist and libertarian.

The Texas Republican weighed on ideological debates among conservatives, saying the future of conservative politics can be a combination of libertarian beliefs and populism during a Tuesday interview with the Washington Examiner about his podcast, The Verdict, co-hosted by conservative commentator Michael Knowles.

"I think properly understood, those concepts are complementary, and they're not antagonistic. So I am a conservative, an unabashed conservative. I'm also a populist. I am deeply a populist," Cruz began. "And I also have deep libertarian principles. Look, if you're protecting liberty, that is the foundation of our country. That is the foundation of our Constitution and Bill of Rights. When it comes to populism, I think the most fundamental and important shifts in the last decade in politics is that Republicans have become the party of the working class."

The idea of conservatism "conserving" libertarian beliefs, or classical liberalism, has recently been challenged by some writers. Sohrab Ahmari, a conservative opinion editor for the New York Post, advocated for a "common good" conservatism in May 2019. In an opinion piece for religious publication First Things, he wrote, "Here is the problem: The movement we are up against prizes autonomy above all, too; indeed, its ultimate aim is to secure for the individual will the widest possible berth to define what is true and good and beautiful, against the authority of tradition."

"There's some people who want to use the word populism to say, 'Well, we should just have socialism.' No, socialism is not populism. That's not good for the workers. Socialism is tyranny of government. Every socialist government across the globe has produced poverty and misery and suffering and death," Cruz said.

Every socialist government across the globe has produced poverty and misery and suffering and death," Cruz said.

We would be so much better of if the population understood this.
Unfortunately the majority of our people don't.

But at least more are starting to wake up.

"The only way he can be President is if it’s also anti-Constitutional"

Nope. You are still wrong.

Populism is fickle, its whatever the mob wants at the current time. And basically populism is relative pandering to the mob’s current demands and whims.

It would not surprise me if a state wanted to secede sooner or later. Perhaps Texas...

Maybe Cruz see’s this!

Susan Collins did not vote to impeach Trump. She voted to acquit him on both articles of impeachment.

Actually I respect her for that vote. It’s probably going to cost her.

Why do you want people with divided loyalties/multiple citizenship in the White House?

That’s precisely what the founders were excluding with the natural born citizen clause.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarian_perspectives_on_LGBT_rights#United_States

Libertarian Party
In 1972, John Hospers, who was widely believed to be gay (although not openly so),[5] ran for President as the Libertarian Party’s first presidential candidate.[6][7]

In 1975, Ralph Raico helped to create the Libertarian For Gay Rights caucus within the party and subsequently published Gay Rights: A Libertarian Approach.

The second LGBT rights organization to operate from a libertarian perspective was the Libertarians for Gay and Lesbian Concerns. The organization held its first national convention in 1985 and sought to promote libertarianism to LGBT Americans.[8]

In 1998, Outright Libertarians was formed. Outright Libertarians are also affiliated with the Libertarian Party and takes many of the same position that the Libertarians for Gay and Lesbian Concerns did in the 1980s.

In 2009, the Libertarian Party came out against H.R. 1913, a proposed hate crime bill that would add to the federal hate crime statute the categories of sexual orientation, gender identity and disability. The reason the Libertarian Party opposed the proposed hate crimes bill was because it would violate equal justice under the law by creating different classes of victims for the same crime. The Libertarian Party also accused legislators of attempting to buy the support of the LGBT community while still opposing same-sex marriage and repealing Don’t ask, don’t tell.[9]

In 2013, the Libertarian Party applauded the Supreme Court’s decision United States v. Windsor to strike down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) as unconstitutional. The Libertarian Party has supported same-sex marriage since its founding in 1971.[10]

I think we should all be opposed to “hate crime” laws ....

The LP are right to oppose them.

Prosecutors use them for what their not intended for..

Conservatives oppose hate crimes laws for the same reason. The rest of those positions don’t jibe with conservationism.

I don’t support the LP but there are a lot of well intentioned people and they should be allies on a lot of issues!

People don’t have to move out of the new country, liberal or conservative. They would understand that they’re living under conditions and ideologies which they disagree with. It’s up to them whether they want to tolerate living that way. Except that, under socialism/communism, freedom of thought would be limited if allowed at all.

Economically, I don’t see anybody that believes in the free-market/capitalism system staying in the liberal area, and eventually, they would have to move to the area which is more agreeable to them.

The split doesn’t mean that people have to immediately leave and more to ‘where they belong’; that can happen in a span of years.

When it comes to the geographical split, perhaps it would have to be a split into 3 countries, with liberals staying put in the northeast and western areas. and conservatives taking over the south and central regions of the ‘old’ USA. The Illinois/Michigan areas can become part of Canada and good riddance to them.

Populism is fickle, its whatever the mob wants at the current time. And basically populism is relative pandering to the mob’s current demands and whims.

In other words ‘politics’ ... The Dems pander when offering free stuff ... conservatives should learn how to appeal and pander but not contravene their principles.

Supporting civil liberties, criminal justice reform, ending the War on drugs and balancing the budget would be a good start ...

McCain had a special resolution from the Senate that said he was a natural born citizen because he had TWO citizen parents.

If you think Ted Cruz is eligible you also think Anwar al-Awlaki’s kids, born in Yemen to one citizen parent, are also natural born citizens.

Separation won’t work. What the left wants most is power and what they do best is infiltration. There have completed their march through the United States institutions, including both major political parties and most if not all government agencies. There only thing stopping them from having absolute power is Trump. If there were a separation, they would simply infiltrate and take over the institutions in the new country.

There is no winning while they have any power at all

you cant pander and not contravene your conservative principles.

because the people you pander to WANT SOMETHING. if they cared about conservatism and your conservative principles they wouldn’t need to be bribed to agree with you.

persuading isn’t pandering

democrats buy or extort/blackmail people

we need to persuade without pandering or having to buy them by giving them something, thats what demtards and socialists do

i am always amazed how many on our side don’t learn anything about who we are up against. they are so blind.

the left will never let those who disagree with them alone, to live in peace with their own beliefs and consciences. if you’ve learned nothing about them, let this sink in. they will not lwt anyone with a differing opinion than theirs, be able to live in peace, to coexist with them without them trying to punish, attack, make illegal, riot against them by force.
