Georgia hospital field report
It’s been awhile since I’ve checked in. Our census remains low as no elective procedures are taking place and locals are avoiding the ED at all costs.
Surge planning continues and Zoom meetings seem to be our entire workday. Over the past 10-14 days the influx of COVID patients has been steady but slow, never topping out at more than 12 confirmed admits at one time. ICU has never been full, there have been less than 5 intubations during the same time period, ICU only at 70% capacity.
Long story short, we are cautiously optimistic. There are parts of our state that are much harder hit and we are offering resources and support as available and needed.
I’m still craving nachos and cheese dip at our favorite Mexican restaurant. Maybe by Memorial Day...

Usually symptom day 7-9. As inflammatory markers rise dramatically. Oxygenation worsens and other organ dysfunction begins.
Back of the napkin: if half of the pop. in the US eventually catches CV, at the lowest CFR of 1%, that's 1,650,000 deaths.
If the CFR is more like what many have predicted / and we're seeing, 3.4%, and half the population again catches it, that's 5.6 million deaths.
On the table I recently posted, on the previous thread, the CFR (ratio) is 3.2.
Maybe even up to 33 million deaths (10%), 1 in 10 of our fellow Americans dying isn't that big of a deal out of our pop. of 330 million, when the alternative is to shut down a nation and destroy its way of life.
I doubt it would be that big of a deal in say communist China, but if we turned our backs, and allowed that many to die in America, would we still be the America we once knew - forgetting the 60 million who have already been murdered by abortionist, of course.

The novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) is an infectious acute respiratory infection caused by the novel coronavirus. The virus is a positive-strand RNA virus with high homology to bat coronavirus. In this study, conserved domain analysis, homology modeling, and molecular docking were used to compare the biological roles of certain proteins of the novel coronavirus.
The results showed the ORF8 and surface glycoprotein could bind to the porphyrin, respectively. At the same time, orf1ab, ORF10, and ORF3a proteins could coordinate attack the heme on the 1-beta chain of hemoglobin to dissociate the iron to form the porphyrin. The attack will cause less and less hemoglobin that can carry oxygen and carbon dioxide. The lung cells have extremely intense poisoning and inflammatory due to the inability to exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen frequently, which eventually results in ground-glass-like lung images.
The mechanism also interfered with the normal heme anabolic pathway of the human body, is expected to result in human disease. According to the validation analysis of these finds, chloroquine could prevent orf1ab, ORF3a, and ORF10 to attack the heme to form the porphyrin, and inhibit the binding of ORF8 and surface glycoproteins to porphyrins to a certain extent, effectively relieve the symptoms of respiratory distress. Since the ability of chloroquine to inhibit structural proteins is not particularly obvious, the therapeutic effect on different people may be different.
Favipiravir could inhibit the envelope protein and ORF7a protein bind to porphyrin, prevent the virus from entering host cells, and catching free porphyrins. This paper is only for academic discussion, the correctness needs to be confirmed by other laboratories. Due to the side effects and allergic reactions of drugs such as chloroquine, please consult a qualified doctor for treatment details, and do not take the medicine yourself.

Almost all adults were immune to measles, thus no adults became sick. Other than a few kids staying home from school with their mother (who was immune), there was no reason to "shut down the nation". There was no interruption to daily business because no one in business was ill or at risk of becoming ill.
You wanted your kids to have measles between 5 and 15 years old because it was much worse as an adult. People litterally ensured their kids got the measles, even having "measles parties" when one child was infected so the rest would get it and become immune. Measles was never a massive outbreak, and at any particular time there were relatively few people infected. COVID-19 is killing more Americans every day than Measles killed in a year.
I bet that was the poor Chinese grad student who had to go get those samples. Yuck.

My wife is dealing with serious cancer. I’ve spent days in chemo and appointments..before this—in rooms full of people with more cancer than he.
They are not insane. Even those who have every right to lash out. And the gross discussions have been fun.
He has always been a blowhard. He was a rotund radio guy who struck gold. I respect him for that.
But no one should take any medical advice from someone who smoked himself to stage IV lung cancer. Don’t get me wrong, I feel bad for the guy. But I don’t listen to him ramblings about disease.
Back in the 1800’s we absolutely shut down large swaths of the nation. It was a different world.
