Half right; a virus must use a host cell to replicate. Ignoring the roll of zinc in halting the replication would yield very random results. As far as I know a virus cannot ‘develop’ resistant strains to zinc cancellation of the replication necessity. Infiltration of bacterial cell walls is another road to research ... especially the gut bacteria.
