Senators reportedly wore Apple Watches to the impeachment trial, seemingly violating the electronics ban

Electronics are banned from Trump's impeachment hearing.

Some senators reportedly flouted this rule, and wore (Apple) smart watches to the proceedings.

According to decorum guidelines given to senators before the trial began, electronics are not allowed in the room at all. The rules read "No use of phones or electronic devices will be allowed in the Chamber. All electronics should be left in the Cloakroom in the storage provided." The rules prohibit tools that senators would typically use to connect with the outside world and share information on social media, although it seems likely that Trump himself will be on Twitter.

Sen. John Cornyn, one of the senators who reportedly wore an Apple Watch during the trial, told The Hill last week "We will not have our electronic devices. I just saw a piece of cabinetry in the cloakroom where we will be required to turn over our iPads and our iPhones."

Along with Cornyn, Roll Call reported that Sens. Mike Lee, John Thune, Jerry Moran, John Barrasso, Tim Scott, Michael Bennet, and Patty Murray were reportedly spotted with smart watches.

I’m told an Apple watch can record. If so, it’s an easy way to get around the rules and provide news outlets with select bits of what went on just as if someone carried a recorder into the session with them.

Unless apple watches have made strides mine didn’t have a keypad to send email or text messages, it had a few preset “canned” reply words but that was it.

Yes they can and they don’t have to be near the phone, they can down load later. Not something I want on my wrist.

Trump’s attorneys should’ve gone to a “spy store” and picked up one of those inexpensive cell signal blockers and brought it in during the trial. How hard would that be?

Such watches could conceivably be abused, but in practice would be little more than ... watches.

Of course the headline has to bash Apple Watch in particular, failing to note that there are other “smart watches” available & popular which are also likely being worn.

Like guns: if someone really wants to abuse one under such circumstances, rules against mere possession won’t stop someone pursuing substantially greater crimes.

Good grief - anything for a headline. They’re not Dick Tracy watches for cryin’ out loud.

I don't know about that -- mine blows his out of the water. Built in phone, texting, etc. Poor Dick only had 2 way voice.

The cellular models can leave the paired phone at home.

"Such watches could conceivably be abused, but in practice would be little more than ... watches."

So no democrat would actually record all or part of something said in the hearings and hand it, edited or not to someone in the media to further the Chuckie meme of this all being a Republican "Cover Up" because Apple would never sell one of their watches to someone so inclined?

gotcha.

Basically you're saying an Apple watch is an electronic recording device but that no Apple watch owner would sink so low as to abuse it.

Go take a remedial class in reading comprehension.
Or offer your services to Schiff re misrepresenting plain meaning.

To rephrase the plainly stated:

1. If someone wants to surreptitiously record there, for later abuse, prohibiting smartwatches won’t hinder them.

2. As normally configured, recording conversations via a smartwatch is, well, isn’t much of an option.

3. There are many more smartwatches out there than just Apple Watch. Harping on that product in particular is a clue one is seeking clickbait and arguments, not actually addressing a real issue.

And imputing meaning upon me which is the opposite of what I plainly said is, well, idiotic.

Will an Apple watch operate without being tethered to an Iphone or Ipad?

Not nearly idiotic when responding to something that, as our further explanation shows, was unclear in the post to which I responded.

But if posting a more detailed explanation of your opinion was painful for you, I understand your apparent irritation in response the great pain you feel and I forgive you.

have a lovely day

Uh, actually, they are these days. You can make calls and text to and from Apple Watches these days. No iPhone required. There are games you can play on your Apple Watch too. The distraction capability is there.
