****Devil Dogs: Hero Marines of WWI****

For my Freeper family....

If you are moved by 'Heroes'....real Heroes.... and would like to spend one hour totally blown away by what happened at Belleau Wood France in June of 1918...you will not find a better, more beautiful done, more moving tribute than this documentary. I highly recommend it. Semper Fi

Challenge you to stay dry eyed.

(From Comments)

What an incredibly touching and beautiful story and such a fascinating tale of this man’s life’s work to bring to present day the stories and artifacts long lost in the forest on the battlefield back to present day descendants. This one man created a modern link back 100 years in order to bring those swallowed up by time, space, and circumstance simply because he has such a passion for it. Part historian, part treasure hunter, part Marine fanboy; this unassuming Frenchman manages to pull at your heart and make you weep because of his dedication and quiet resolve to honor people he never knew and give their humanity back to family members who never thought that they would have such an opportunity. For anyone interested in military history, or WWI, or enjoy seeing proof of humanity and kindness in our vast world, I cannot recommend this movie more highly! 2 people found this helpful

"I stumbled on this movie searching for something completely different. Was curious. Watched the first few minutes. And then couldn't stop. Cinematography is awesome, the story is amazing, and simply an honor to watch."

""This French gentlemen and now honorary Marine, made a film that truly showed what The Marines In the battle of Belleau Wood went through. Plus he informed descendants about thier Marine ancestor, and even returned a dog tag to a Great Nephew. Very touching film. Great historical account. JESUS bless this French gentleman, and all U.S. Marines. JESUS is SEMPER Fi.""

I have had the honor to visit Belleau Wood ("Bois de la Brigade Marines") And trenches are still visible and I found a piece of German artillery shell still there.

Hellova fight!

I love the story of Soo Chow. He was captured with the 4th Marines at Corregidor in 1942 and lived to bark his story in California.

“With the Help of God and a Few Marines”: The Battles of Chateau Thierry and Belleau Wood by Albertus W. Catlin (Author)

The author was the Marine commander during the battle. He also writes of the Marines pre-WW1 and his participation in various events in places such as Cuba and the Philippines in the Spanish American War and Vera Cruz in the Mexico War and in Nicaragua.

A quote from that battle:

I have only two men out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold. [1stLt. Clifton B. Cates, USMC; in Belleau Wood, 19 July 1918]

Thanks for posting this.

In the same vein, Peter Jackson’s incredible WW1 documentary
“They Shall Not Grow Old” was stunning. It is being re-released in December for 3 special showings, to commemorate its 1-year anniversary. I’m definitely going to see it again.

Above is a link to a song by a Christian singer/guitarist. Inspired by a visit to some small cemetery of Americans killed in France in WWI. Especially the many crosses with “Unknown but to God” on them.

Long introduction ends around 3:15.

Sabaton - Devil Dogs (Music Video)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIC6OhYwOqw

the video with it is a good reminder that the fight to just get into the woods was brutal and bloody. Crossing those wheatfields against German machine guns with almost no artillery support (the artillery had been stripped from that portion of the front and sent north for the planned “big push” by higher command) cost a lot of Marines’ lives.

What’s also usually lost in the telling is that this battle, for all intents and purposes, was a “meeting engagement”.

The Germans were advancing. The French were falling back with plans to keep falling back in a fighting withdraw to the defenses around Paris, and the US forces force marched and trucked up over a three day period, with very little rest on the way, and where they met was where the battle happened.

That’s the context of the “Retreat? Hell, we just got here!” quote. It was in response to a French officer telling a Marine officer that the Germans were right behind the French and coming fast.

It’s been said that a German general once categorized the potential of officers like this:

“I divide my officers into four classes as follows: The clever, the industrious, the lazy, and the stupid. Each officer always possesses two of these qualities.

Those who are clever and industrious I appoint to the General Staff. Use can under certain circumstances be made of those who are stupid and lazy. The man who is clever and lazy qualifies for the highest leadership posts. He has the requisite nerves and the mental clarity for difficult decisions. But whoever is stupid and industrious must be got rid of, for he is too dangerous.”

What in your opinion limits capable officers to the rank of Colonel and what factors propel them to there general rank?

Thanks in advance for your insight.

Not sure about the Marines Colonel but in the army apparently Lt. Col’s dictate our foreign policy. I remember them being battalion commanders, but maybe times have changed?

In my experience, it was the same in the Marine Corps LtCols had the most influence/caused the most problems. And I did command an artillery battalion for 18 months quite happily.

The "only a LtCol" comment is meant to be wry. I'm happy with my career, since I started as a private at the very bottom end of things.

It's sort of a runnng joke I use: when I attended a 40th high school reunion I was asked to make a speech and one of my friends introduced me as "Lieutenant Colonel Chainmail". I told my classmates that 400 years from now, archaeologists will find my tombstone , carefully brush the sand from the letters and read "LtCol Chainmail USMC ret" and then he'll turn to his comoatriots and say "I wonder why he didn't make Colonel?".

sic transit gloria
