Bluebird makes genetic medicines where they start with the HIV-1 virus (yeah, that one) and remove the "Payload" genes that cause AIDS, replacing them with whatever "Good" payload is desired.
The HIV-1 has the ability over a period of years to enter the nucleus of every cell in the body and change its DNA. That's why it is the basis of genetic medicine of the future.
Think of the virus as a boxcar on a train. The cargo can be changed, but the basic ability of the train to deliver to destinations (in this case, nuclei of cells) is the same. When used in this way, the HIV-1 framework is referred to as a "Lentivirus vector." (The lenti- prefix should be recognizable to musicians: It means "Slow", as in taking years to spread within the body.)
BLUE has a number of diseases ALREADY APPROVED in the EU, and has started to treat real patients.
GET THIS: For one rare disease, Bluebird's genetic medicine costs $1.8 million per dose.
But it only takes one dose.
Think of AIDS. Just one exposure of the virus into the bloodstream is all it takes. The rest is just a matter of time (i.e., years, even decades to complete the re-wiring of DNA throughout the body).
Here's the deal: You pay for your single dose over 5 years, and Bluebird (BLUE) guarantees it. If you show any signs of the disease again, you stop paying.
Hmm. What is a lifetime without cancer worth? What are the alternative hospitalization costs which are avoided?
Incidentally, BLUE has about $1.8 billion in cash. So they will definitely be around to see whether they have created the future of genetic medicine.

Disclosure 2: Yes, there are other companies with drugs coming out based on similar principles. BTW, the HIV-1 virus is NEVER MENTIONED IN COMPANY LITERATURE. Instead, for PR purposes, they call it by its family name: LENTIVIRUS. (And if BLUE is successful, some of those other companies will probably also be successful.)
